46. Chapter Forty-Six
I curl tighter against Jamie’s chest, my forehead pressed to the soft give of his white t-shirt.
The fabric carries his scent, golden amber and warm vanilla with a subtle trace of citrus peel that always makes me think of sunlight and laughter.
Right now that scent is the only grounding thing in the world.
My skin burns. Every inch of me feels too tight, too hot, like my body is trying to crawl out of itself.
Another wave rolls through me, this one is sharper than the last, a cramp that twists low in my belly and steals the air from my lungs. I gasp, fingers digging into his shoulders, and the sound that slips out of me is small and broken.
Jamie’s arms tighten around me, keeping me close.
Adrian speaks, his voice stays low and even, the same calm tone he uses when he explains biochemical pathways in the library.
“I need to be clear, this isn’t a spike, Elodie.
Your body has tipped into a full heat.” He strokes one slow hand down my spine, grounding me.
“That’s why you’re getting the cramps this time.
Why the fever won’t ease. Why your scent keeps blooming like this, sweet and impossible to ignore.
Spikes can be managed with a good orgasm, usually, but a true heat can’t.
It demands knotting to break each wave, to ease the pain, to let your body rest. The waves will come in cycles.
It could take days until you’re satisfied. ”
I nod weakly against Jamie’s chest, I know how a heat works, but I didn’t realize that it would feel so bad. My throat feels thick. “It hurts,” I whisper, the words breathy and small.
“I know, sweetheart.” His hand keeps moving, each pass pulling a little of the tension from my shoulders. “We’re here. All of us. We’ll stay with you through every wave. You’re safe. You’re choosing this, and we’re choosing you.”
Chase comes back downstairs, I hadn’t even realized he had left. His pine forest and clean musk scent cuts through the haze like a grounding force. His hair is slightly mussed, and there is a satisfied look on his face.
“Nest is ready,” he says, eyes finding mine over Jamie’s shoulder. “Every blanket I could find, all our shirts layered in, pillows fluffed. It’s waiting for you, Elodie.”
Another cramp slams into me before I can answer. This one is vicious, folding me in half against Jamie’s chest. A whine tears from my throat, raw and needy, nothing like the soft sounds I’ve made before. The fever surges higher, burning behind my eyes, licking along every nerve.
I turn my face into Jamie’s neck, breathing him in, and the words slip out on their own.
“Please,” I beg, voice shaking. “Take me upstairs. I need the nest.”
Alex steps closer, his presence commanding without any pressure. His voice is low and formal when he speaks. “Elodie, will you invite any of us into your nest to help you through your heat?”
My answer comes immediately, clipped with fever. “All of you. Please. All of you.”
Jamie shifts me in his arms, he keeps me held aloft easily, cradling me against his chest. I press my cheek to him, shielding my eyes from the lights that feel too harsh all of a sudden.
The pack follows as Jamie carries me upstairs. Adrian stays close on one side, while Chase walks on the other, his pine forest presence grounding and solid. Alex trails just behind us, following close like an invisible tether.
The stairs creak loudly under our collective weight.
Each step sways me gently against Jamie’s chest. His heartbeat is steady beneath my ear.
The warmth of all four alpha scents rises around me like steam from a bath, thick and comforting, filling my lungs until there’s nothing else. My fevered skin drinks it in.
We reach the open door of the nest. Jamie pauses right at the threshold and sets me gently on my feet just outside. For a moment the world tilts, but his hands stay on my waist, keeping me upright.
“We’re right here,” Adrian says softly.
“We have you,” Chase adds, voice rough with emotion.
“Always,” Alex finishes, the single word full of promise.
Jamie’s hand brushes my cheek one last time. “Whenever you are ready.”
I step across the threshold into the nest alone. The alphas wait respectfully in the hallway just behind me. Their presence stays close enough that their scents reach toward me, but they give me this private moment to make the space my own.
My hands tremble as I move deeper into the soft haven.
The fever turns everything hazy at the edges, like the world is wrapped in shimmering silk.
I sink to my knees in the center of the bed and let my fingers explore the layers they prepared for me.
I rearrange the pillows first, shifting them until the angle feels perfect against my cheek.
I smooth the blankets with deliberate strokes of my palms, erasing every wrinkle until the surface feels inviting and even.
Then I reach for their shirts one by one.
I lift Jamie’s shirt and press it to my face, breathing in the bright golden amber and warm vanilla that always makes me smile.
I tuck it beside a pillow. Adrian’s burgundy sweater comes next.
I inhale the cool rain on stone and crisp paper deeply, letting the scent calm the fire racing through me. I layer it carefully over a blanket.
Chase’s flannel shirt pulls me in the strongest. The moment I bring it to my nose, his pine forest and clean musk scent grounds me completely, taming the wild beat of my heart. I hold it longer, breathing him in again and again, before I place it near the spot where my head will rest.
Alex’s collared sweater is last. His dark cedarwood and heat warmed skin scent wraps around me like a firm command. I press it to my cheek and add it to the arrangement, adjusting until the blend feels balanced and complete.
I add tiny instinctive touches. I tuck a corner of fabric here.
I fluff another pillow there. I fold an edge so that the scents mingle in just the right way.
Slowly the nest transforms. It stops being something they made for me and becomes an extension of my own skin, warm and safe and utterly claimed.
When it finally feels right, when every layer sings with safety and home, I turn in the center of the bed. My voice comes out hoarse with need.
“Come in,” I whisper. “I’m ready.”
Chase steps through the doorway first. His massive frame fills the space, but his deep brown eyes stay soft with emotion when they meet mine.
The black tattoos covering his arms and chest shift under the tight fabric of his shirt as he moves closer.
I reach for him instinctively, my hands fisting the front of that shirt and pulling him down to me.
Our mouths crash together in a desperate kiss, open and hungry.
I grind against the hard line of his body, needy sounds spilling from my throat before I can stop them.
“I need you, alpha,” I gasp against his lips. “I need your knot. Please.”
He groans a purr, low in his chest, the sound vibrating through me. His hands map my body with reverent hunger at first, as if he’s memorizing every curve and hollow. Then the heat surges in me again and his touch turns urgent.
We tear at each other’s clothes. My fingers trace the beautiful black ink on his skin, following the lines of art that cover his shoulders and chest. His palms slide over my fevered skin, gentle even as his breath grows ragged.
The last of my skirt and top fall away. His jeans and shirt join them on the floor.
His cock is bigger than any I’ve ever felt before, thicker and longer, and the sight of him sends another wave of slick rushing through me.
Tears prick at the corners of my eyes as he moves between my thighs.
They’re not tears of pain. They come from overwhelming relief and love, from the way his protectiveness almost cost us everything and from the certainty that he’s here now, choosing me exactly as I am.
A single tear slips down my cheek. Chase brushes it away with his thumb, his own eyes glistening.
“I will always protect you,” he whispers against my throat, voice rough and broken. “But never by holding you back. Never again, Elodie. I swear it.”
There’s no time for foreplay, my instincts rearing at me that Chase needs to be inside me. I guide him to my entrance, eyes locked to his.
He pushes inside me as gently as he can, giving me time to adjust. The stretch is more intense than anything I have felt with Jamie, deeper and fuller, a burn that borders on too much before it melts into perfect pleasure.
I cling to his shoulders, nails digging into inked skin, a gasp tearing from me as he sinks in, stopping at his knot.
He pauses there, breathing hard, forehead pressed to mine.
“You are so perfect,” he murmurs. “So good for me.”
Then he begins to move. Each thrust is deep and measured at first, building with the rhythm of my heat. I meet every stroke, hips rising to take him deeper, the wet sounds of our bodies filling the nest along with our mingled scents.
Pine forest and clean musk wrap around my strawberry and peach until I can’t tell where I end and he begins. Tears fall freely now for both of us. His drop onto my shoulder as he drives into me harder, chasing the knot we both need.
The base of him swells, pressing against my entrance with every thrust until the pressure becomes impossible to resist. One final, powerful stroke and his knot locks inside me. The fullness is shattering.
I cry out, back arching, as the knot sinks deep and the fever drops in one sudden, glorious rush. The painful cramps ease instantly, replaced by waves of pure relief that roll through me again and again. My body clenches around him, milking him, and Chase groans my name like a prayer.
We stay locked together, breathing hard. I curl against his broad chest, cheek pressed to warm skin and ink, his arms banding around me like a living shield. His knot pulses inside me, keeping us joined, keeping the worst of the heat at bay for now.
He presses soft kisses to the top of my hair, murmuring apologies and love between each one.
“I’m so sorry I ever made you doubt us,” he whispers. “I love you. I love every brilliant, stubborn part of you.”
I tilt my face up and kiss the tear from his cheek. “I love you too,” I breathe. “All of you. Exactly like this.”
The other alphas are settled around the edges of the nest. Their presence surrounds us completely, warm and safe, while Chase and I remain locked in the center.
Jamie slides in on my left, his golden amber and warm vanilla scent blooming like sunlight across my skin.
Adrian takes the space on my right, his cool rain on stone and crisp paper ink grounding me with every breath.
Alex kneels at the foot of the sunken bed, his dark cedarwood and pepper wrapping around my ankles like a vow.
The fullness of Chase’s knot keeps the worst of the fever at bay, an anchor that lets my body relax for the first time in hours. My breathing slows. The painful cramps have faded to a distant memory, replaced by waves of deep, shimmering relief.
Jamie reaches for a glass of cool water he must have prepared earlier. He holds it to my lips, one hand cradling the back of my head. “Small sips, sweetheart,” he murmurs, voice lined with that familiar playful tenderness.
I drink between soft sighs, the water sliding down my throat like a blessing. Each swallow chases away the last traces of dryness, and Jamie smiles down at me, his light blue eyes sparkling with contentment. “There you go. We have you.”
Adrian’s fingers thread through my hair next, slow and rhythmic strokes that pull a happy hum from my chest. “You’re doing so well,” he whispers. “So strong. So perfect for us. Let the heat take what it needs. We’re right here with you.”
Alex rests a strong hand on my calf, his thumb tracing gentle circles against my skin. The touch is a grounding anchor, connecting me to the earth even while I float in the haze. His cedarwood scent deepens, rich and commanding yet wrapped in care.
“This is only the first wave,” Alex says gently, his voice low and measured so it eases over all of us.
“The heat will build again. Hotter. Longer cycles until your body is fully sated. We are here for all of it, Elodie. However many days it takes. Every wave, every moment… you can let go and know that we have you.”
I nod against Chase’s chest, my cheek pressed to the warm skin and beautiful black ink that covers him.
The words feel hazy in my mind, but the certainty inside me burns brighter than the fever.
“I’m ready,” I whisper, voice thick with emotion and need.
“I want this. To be part of our pack. Properly.”
I remain joined with Chase, his knot still locked deep inside me, keeping me safe and full and cherished. The weight of my words settle between us all.
For a long moment the nest is perfectly still.
Then the relief hits them like a wave I can feel against my skin.
Jamie lets out a shaky laugh that sounds half like a sob, his hand finding mine and squeezing tight.
“God, Elodie,” he breathes, voice thick with everything he can’t quite say.
“You have no idea how long we have waited to hear you say that. To hear you choose us.”
Adrian’s fingers pause in my hair. When he speaks his tone is reverent. “You’re ours now. And we’re yours. No more distance. No more doubt. We’ll prove every single day that this pack is exactly where you belong.”
Chase’s arms band tighter around me, his broad chest rising and falling beneath my cheek.
I feel the tremor run through him, the way his knot pulses once in answer to my words.
“Thank you,” he whispers against the top of my head, voice raw.
“Thank you for trusting us with this. With you. I swear we will never take it for granted.”
Alex’s hand stays unwaveringly on my calf, but his cedarwood scent deepens, rich with emotion he rarely shows so openly. “You are part of our pack now, Elodie. Officially, completely… we are going to spend the rest of our lives making sure you never regret choosing us.”
Their relief and joy wrap around me, warm and bright and so full of love that tears prick at the corners of my eyes again.
I let my lashes drift shut, half dozing against Chase’s chest while their scents braid even tighter in the air.
The knot inside me throbs gently, a constant reminder that I am safe, that I am held, that I am home.
Despite my body, the knot, everything that has happened… pure exhaustion washes over me. My limbs go limp as I nuzzle against Chase, sleep finding me.
