The light over the sink was the only one on as I leaned against the counter, taking a deep breath. Eli moved around the kitchen, fingers tapping the countertop as he shuffled things around endlessly.

“You’re wound tight.” I said, voice low.

He gave me that easy smile, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “It feels so damn good to have her home. Even better knowing she’s finally safe. But—” He trailed off, scrubbing a hand through his hair.

I didn’t need him to finish. I felt it too—the tension in the air.
