Chapter Thirty Eight

Christian

My eyes fluttered open as I heard Cal’s voice, but I felt a cold drift next to me.

“Who the fuck are you?”

Cal’s tone was harsh, and he wasn’t the person standing next to me.

I slowly looked up, my eyes immediately widened with shock. My breath came in short bursts as I quickly glanced at my side, and—Thank God, Clay was sleeping soundly.

Christian scoffed. “Didn’t she tell you?”

he glared at Callum, “I’m her fiancé.”

Callum’s eyes immediately dropped in my direction.

I pulled my lips into a thin line as I swallowed.

Christian found me in the most vulnerable way possible. Clay was unprotected next to me and I could barely get up.

“By the heartbroken look on her face, I’d say she never mentioned it,”

Christian chuckled as he looked down at me, “don’t feel too betrayed, I didn’t even know she was pregnant.”

I curled my hand into a fist as I averted my eyes from his gaze. I couldn’t look at Callum because I was ashamed and embarrassed, and I couldn’t look at Christian because I was disgusted and angry.

“I’ll go tell the doctor you’re awake,”

Callum said.

Once he left the room, I pulled the bed sheet over my body and looked at Clay who was still sleeping.

“He’s not yours,”

I said, still not making any eye contact. I didn’t even want him to think about the baby as his, Clay wasn’t and will never be.

“I figured,”

Christian replied, “I wouldn’t mind raising him as my own.”

Hair stood on the back of my neck with disgust. I almost shuddered as the sentence left his mouth. I wanted to do everything possible to remove him from mine and Clay’s life.

“I’d rather pay off my debt,”

I spat out finally looking up at him, “let’s get one thing straight, Christian, it’s over. It’s been over since I walked off on you, I’m never going back with you.”

He pulled his brows together. “What? You think you’re hot shit because you’ve got yourself a shabby shop in a dead town, or do you think you’re better than me because you’re fucking someone who can give you a decent life?”

His words were harsh.

Just like always.

I just haven’t heard the sound of his voice or felt his cold demeanor in a while. My breath was now labored as I tried to calm down or to at least stop my lips from quivering.

“I’ll never be yours, Christian,”

I said as my voice trembled, “never again.”

His lips slowly pulled upwards into an uncomfortable smile as he leaned down and pressed his cold lips against my ear. “That’s for me to decide, sweet pea.”

The door clicked open, and Callum and the doctor entered the room. I froze as Christian’s lips trailed down to my cheek, my nose flared as he kissed my skin. “I’ll put on a show because I know your boyfriend’s watching,”

he whispered, grinning as he pulled away.

I felt even more embarrassed. My body felt weak, and tears welled in my eyes. I didn’t dare to release my lips from the bite because I thought I’d start sobbing.

Callum was looking at me like he couldn’t understand what was happening, like he was begging me for an explanation. Which I couldn’t offer to him, not now at least.

“How often does he eat?”

the doctor asked as he came to my side and took a look at Clay. I blinked as I tried to think. I’d been so tired, I could barely remember—

“Every four hours it seems,”

Cal answered, “we tried to hit the every two hours mark but Juliette’s been really tired and he seems to sleep a lot.”

The doctor shook his head as he started pulling the blanket off Clay to check his heartbeat. “Every four to five hours is good.”

I smiled at Cal, but he averted his eyes from mine and looked at Clay.
