Chapter 11

I’ve been attendingthis school for less than two weeks, and somehow, in just that short amount of time, I’ve gone from being invisible to the people of Westbrook to having everybody know my name.

I’ve become Kai Kingston’s plaything.

Like a cat plays with a mouse before it eats it, he’s playing with me for his own twisted entertainment. It’s awful. He’s awful. I honestly don’t think I can do this much longer. I want to drop out and run home to my brother, just like he told me I would.

Every time Kai’s around me, he crowds my space, taunts me with his eyes, throws words around that make my stomach clench, and makes me look like an idiot. Last week in the middle of the cafeteria, he not so quietly told me how good I am at riding his dick. He’s full of shit and I’m sure everyone knows it, but still, they laugh and it’s mortifying.

And then there are the words that are just for me, the ones he whispers in my ear in passing, the ones he sends me every day before school. He texted me again the morning after he came to my apartment building, and every morning since, and even though they’re the exact same words as before, there’s menace in them now.

See you soon, beautiful.

A shiver runs through me, and I blame it on the school library”s air conditioning, shifting in my seat as I slide my left hand between my thighs to keep it warm.

I feel like a mouse caught in a trap, one he keeps close to his side, only giving me some breathing room when he feels like it, which isn’t very often. Like now, for example, I have a free period so I’m studying to get ahead as much as I can, my books spread out around me as Kai hovers—just fucking hovers like he’s my keeper or some shit.

In a quiet corner of the library, he’s sitting next to me with his arm slung across the back of my chair, his legs spread out as he leans back like a lazy king, his eyes on his phone as he scrolls through his social media accounts. There’s no point moving away from him. He’ll only follow me and cause some sort of scene while he does it.

My jaw ticks, and I scoot to the edge of my seat, feeling his eyes on my ass as I lean over to grab my math notebook from the edge of my organized mess laid out on the table.

“You’re doing that on purpose.” His voice is low, and it sends another shiver running through me.

His hand squeezes my inner thigh as I’m bent over, and I jump at the contact, turning and using the book I’m holding to smack his arm away.

“Don’t even?—”

Before I can finish, his hands are on my waist and he’s pushing his chair back, lifting me up and pulling me in until I’m straddling his lap. Heads turn this way, a few people snickering before they go back to their own studies, a few people openly gawking at us, waiting for his next move. The other Kingstons aren’t around to watch right now, but I don’t care why or where they are. I just wish they’d come get their boy before I punch him in his tattooed throat.

He grins up at me with that infuriating fuck boy grin, and I open my mouth to tell him how close I am to actually punching him, but then I note the look in his eyes, the one daring me to mouth off. Fuck him. I say nothing.

“Come on, baby,” he urges, sliding both hands into my back pockets. “Play with me.”

I laugh helplessly at that, reaching behind me to pull on his wrists. “Why, so you can cause an even bigger scene than this one and try to make me look like a slut again? You think I’m stupid?”

“I can tell you what I think if you want,” he offers, leaning in to close the distance between us. “I think you’re sexy as fuck and I think you know it. I think you put these tight little jeans on today because you like how fucking good they make your ass look. I think you knew I’d look at it, that I’d want it in my fucking hands.” He gently squeezes. “And I think you’re gonna scream my name when I bend you over and bury my tongue inside i?—”

“Jesus,” I hiss. “Will you keep your voice down?”

His smirk is dirty as fuck. Suddenly hot all over, I look around to check if anyone heard him. A couple people did, judging by the looks they’re hitting us with, and now I’m wishing I could get away with murder.

Kai squeezes my ass again to pull my attention back to him, his mouth near my ear as he whispers, “Whatever you say, beautiful.”

Still pulling on his wrists, I twist on his lap, but it’s useless. I can’t stand up. I can’t move an inch, my arms stretched behind my back, my breasts in his face. I dig my nails into the backs of his hands, and he groans, flexing his hips as if he’s trying to use my pussy to adjust himself.

God.

Releasing his arms, I bring my hands around and push down on his shoulders, trying to get up, but the move only brings us closer together, his breath hitting my neck while I try to slide up his body.

“Hailey,” he rasps.

“What?”

“Fuck, baby, you tryna make me come right here?”

I freeze on top of him.

I shouldn’t like the pure desire in his eyes, the heat in his tone when he says, “I bet I could make you feel better than he ever has, just like this without even taking your clothes o?—”

I cringe and slap a hand over his mouth, begging him with my eyes not to finish that sentence. “Stop talking.”

He stops, but only for a few beats. “I want you so bad,” he mumbles against my palm.

“Why can’t you go want someone else?” I whisper harshly.

He jerks his head, freeing his mouth from beneath my hand. “Like who?”

“Like Madison.” I sneer, jabbing my elbow into his arm.

That makes him smile. “Are you jealous?”

“Or Callie,” I add, refusing to acknowledge that ridiculous question. “I heard your nasty little queen is real good at taking care of all of you at onc?—”

Oh shit. Shit, I shouldn’t have said that, but before I can even think about backtracking, he’s snatching my wrists and pinning them behind my back with one hand, roughly taking my throat with the other one and pulling my face toward his.

“Kai—”

“Easy, baby,” he says, making it sound threatening and soothing all at once. “I’m gonna let that slide because you’re all worked up and I know you’re just lashing out, trying to hit me where it hurts, but just know that the next time you talk shit about Callie, I won’t be so nice about it.”

Cold fear creeps up my spine, and I can’t help but believe him, thinking about the things they did to my brother the night they found him with Callie.

“You call this nice?”

“I call this getting your pussy wet.” He tilts my head to one side, moving his lips over my cheek. “Tell me I’m wrong.”

When I open my mouth, he shakes his head in mock disapproval, stopping me. “Don’t lie to me,” he warns. “I don’t like liars.”

I hate him.

“Well?”

“Go away,” I say through my teeth.

He raises a brow before looking over at something beside us. With my throat still in his hand, I follow his line of sight, finding all four of the other Kingstons waiting for their brother by the door. The boys are all looking directly at me, their expressions cold and empty like they always are since they saw me with Derek, but Callie can’t seem to help herself. She’s got an amused smile on her face, leaning back against Damon’s chest with her hands shoved into the pockets of that massive black hoodie she wears all the time. Most of the girls around here wear designer skirts and six inch heels to school, but not Callie. She’s happy in her ripped jeans with her black makeup and her dark, messy hair that looks as if she doesn’t bother to fix it after she’s been rolling around in the sheets with Damon. As much as I hate to admit it, the look suits her. She’s ridiculously beautiful.

Finally done playing with me, Kai stands up and sets me down on the table next to my books. With his body wedged between my legs, he lowers his face to mine and runs his thumbs over my throat, soothing the spot he grabbed just now.

“Go away,” I repeat slowly.

A small smile touches his lips. I don’t miss the look in his eyes as he moves to leave.

He’ll go away.

For now.
