9. Chapter Seven
CHAPTER SEVEN
KRIK
K irk looked over at Betsy, fast asleep on his bed. After the whole knife incident, he put her down for a nap. Betsy didn’t want to but as he rocked her in the rocking chair, she fell fast asleep against him.
Now he was attempting to do some work for Rogan but it was hard when he knew she was sleeping on the little bed right behind him. After she had fallen asleep, he had moved the cot into his office so he could keep an eye on her. One thing he didn’t have was a baby monitor to keep watch her as he worked.
“Get back to work,” he mumbled to himself.
Turning back around, he started typing on his computer. Rogan had sent him several names to look into. Some of them were Ethan’s men and some were from a rival gang and politicians.
Ever since Miles found his sister and she had gotten abused by the FBI agent, they had been looking into who they were associated with. They hadn’t realized how many of them were women beaters.
They couldn’t take out all of them, but they were slowly releasing information so they got into trouble and some of them were put behind bars.
Kirk looked back over at Betsy and groaned. He really needed to stop looking over at her and getting distracted but it was hard. She looked so cute sleeping, sucking on the pacifier, as she held onto her stuffed animal, Mike.
He still couldn’t believe that she was doing jobs and not looking into the people she was going to ruin or get information from. He didn’t understand how she didn’t think it was important. How many people did she cross? How many people were after her?
“What were you thinking?” he mumbled.
If Rogan had caught wind of her hacking into Bonnie’s website and changing things, he would have been livid. Or even Ethan. He wouldn’t have even blinked twice before killing Betsy.
Rogan could have asked him to look into Betsy and have him send people over without knowing the reason. What if Bonnie went to Rogan instead? What would have happened to Betsy? Would she be dead in some alleyway or would he have tortured her for several hours before dumping her body in the river?
Kirk shook his head. He didn’t want to think about that. She was here now with him and that was all that mattered. He was just going to have to show Betsy how dangerous that could have been for her.
“Bonnie,” he whispered.
He had totally forgotten to call her back after he got Betsy. Picking his phone up, he dialed Bonnie’s number.
“Hello?”
“Bonalicious. The girl, Betsy, is safe and she feels terrible for what she did to you.”
“Kirk,” her tone was short and filled with worry.
“I went and talked to her.”
Kirk lied. He had also made her pass out, kidnapped her, and brought her back to his apartment but Bonnie didn’t need to know that.
“You didn’t hurt her, right? I told you not to. Please tell me you didn’t,” Bonnie rushed out.
“Bonalicious, I’m going to need you to take a deep breath. Good. I didn’t hurt her. She is safe.”
“Did you leave her alone? Just go over to give her a scolding? Did you harm her in any way?”
“Bonnie. Listen to me.”
He turned away from Betsy. Bonnie wasn’t listening to him and it was evident with her questions.
“What? I am listening but you can answer my questions. Did you just go over to give her a scolding and then leave? Did you harm her or threaten her in any way when you were there?”
“Bonicle.”
She gasped. “You know I don’t like it when you call me that.”
“Then maybe you should actually listen to what I am saying.”
“I am!”
“Are you really?”
She wasn’t and Bonnie was going to realize that.
“Fine. What were you saying?” she sighed.
“I said I didn’t hurt her and she is safe.”
“So you just went over and scolded her?”
“Yes.”
“That’s it? Did you threaten her?”
“No. Well, not really.”
Had he said he could call Rogan and have him deal with her? Yes and it was a little threat.
“Kirk.”
“She is safe. I promise you she is safe.”
He looked back over at Betsy. Her hair was sprawled across the pillow, the blanket half on her, as she clutched Mike close to her.
If he hadn’t known Mike was her stuffed animal, he would have threatened to kill him. Kirk hadn’t known Betsy long, but he was protective and decided she was his.
There was nothing she could do about it. She needed protecting and guidance and he was going to give it to her.
“Did you do anything else to her?” Bonnie asked.
It was like she knew he had her in his apartment. Did Angelo tell Bonnie? He had briefly explained what had happened before she dashed out of the room and grabbed the knife.
It was like his life flashed before his eyes as he walked into that kitchen. The look of absolute terror that was on her face.
What had happened to her?
Betsy mentioned not wanting to be held hostage again. Who held her hostage? How long? Were they still alive?
Kirk hadn’t had time to fully look into her background. Part of him didn’t want to because he wanted her to trust him. But the other part wanted to so he could figure out what happened.
If they were still alive, they wouldn’t be for long. No one got away with hurting her. No one.
“Kirk?”
“Yes?”
“Did you do anything else to her?”
“You just need to know she is safe”
“What have you done?”
He sighed. He didn’t really want her to know. If Rogan asked, she wouldn’t be able to keep it a secret. Rogan didn’t need to know right now, not when things were still up in the air. Kirk wanted Betsy to be able to acclimate to things before she met many more people.
“I haven’t done anything you need to know about. It’s better for you to not know anything right now. Don’t worry. She is safe.”
Before Bonnie could answer, he heard Rogan’s voice in the background.
“Smell you later,” Bonnie whispered before hanging up.
Sighing, he leaned back into his chair and looked over at Betsy. She was still peacefully asleep on the little cot he brought in. Should he wake her up soon or should he let her sleep? He didn’t know if she had been getting good sleep before he got her.
That was something he was going to ask. His baby needed to get good rest and if she wasn’t, he was going to make her take naps. Maybe he should just implement that anyways. Naps were good for people.
He was also going to make sure she ate and drank enough. Was she at the computer screen too much and forgot to take care of herself? Had she been eating regularly?
Kirk knew she lived in a bad neighborhood and he just hoped she wasn’t struggling too much and had to skip meals. But that wouldn’t be happening anymore. He was going to make sure of it.
“You’re going to keep me on my toes,” he whispered as she moved in the little cot.
Her face was pushed against her stuffy as she suckled on the pacifier, looking all cute and cuddly.
Kirk got up from his seat and walked over, taking a picture of Betsy as she slept.
“So precious,” he whispered.
Setting the picture to his lockscreen, he stares at her for a couple more seconds.
“Daddy is going to keep you safe and protected,” he gently ran his hand through her hair.
