Chapter 4 The Last Straw

I stormed back into the bedroom and started packing. Everything in this place—I’d bought it all.

Gu Qu Nian’s family wasn’t well-off. I felt sorry for him, so I rented this apartment myself. Every month, the rent came straight from my account.

I didn’t have much to take. Just my documents. That was enough.

The rest? I could buy new ones.

Outside, Gu Qu Nian walked into the kitchen. He opened the fridge, grabbed a bottle of water, and then paused when he saw the cake sitting in the trash.

His phone buzzed again—another flood of notifications.

At the Gathering Dinner, he’d brushed off the messages the whole time.

Right then, he stood there staring at the cake a little longer than usual.

So today was my Birthday.

After a moment, he came to the bedroom door and knocked.

“Liao Xing, I’m sorry. I didn’t know today was your Birthday.”

The door wasn’t locked. He pushed it open gently.

I kept my head down. “Didn’t know? I reminded you so many times. You just never cared.”

“That’s it then. Goodbye.”

When he saw me packing, whatever small guilt he felt vanished completely.

His face turned cold as he listed my faults.

“You’re always so quick to lose your temper, always making a fuss over nothing. Liao Xing, with that personality, no one can stand you for long.”

“No young master background, yet you act like one. I won’t spoil you anymore.”

“If you changed that temper, things wouldn’t be so bad with your family. Your parents wouldn’t have stopped loving you.”

I never expected him to twist the knife like that—even now.

My parents might not have loved me enough, but they never said anything that cruel.

“Stand you? Stand your fucking ass. I do whatever the hell I want.”

“I’m the real young master. I suffered with you long enough. No more service!”

While we were together, I never hid who I was. But he never noticed.

The Liao family had money—quiet money.

Because his family struggled, I went along with cheap things. Discount groceries. Anything so he wouldn’t call me wasteful or bad with money.

But every gift I gave him was expensive. He didn’t recognize the brands. He never caught on.

He always thought I was just some neglected kid from an ordinary family.

Back then I told myself it proved he loved me for real. He wouldn’t approach me for the Liao name.

Now? I just felt ridiculous.

This cheap Rented Room—I hated it at first. My skin broke out in rashes. I used cream after cream until it finally stopped.

I lived here with him for a whole year. Forced myself to get used to it.

For him, I even learned to cook. Spent a whole month just to manage the basics. I still went to the supermarket for discounted vegetables.

In the Liao house, I’d never even stepped into the kitchen.

Gu Qu Nian kept following me, still talking.

“Even if you regret it later, I won’t let you come back. Next month I’m terminating the lease.”

“Whatever.”

I felt nothing. I grabbed my bag and left.
