Chapter 33
I straightened my bow tie for the hundredth time. The thing was beginning to suffocate me and I was dying to take it off.
"Would you fancy a dance, detective?" I turned to find Ivan's hand stretched out.
"You are late, the wedding is over." I stated.
Ivan stood there in his regular black suits watching me. He didn't say a word, his storm eyes lingering on mine and suddenly I couldn't take it anymore I took off the stupid tie.
"You look gorgeous detective," he commented quietly. I was about to ask him about Vance when Valentina snaked her arm around mine.
"Mr Bratan I'm so glad that you could make it to our wedding. Being that Kayde has been working for you the past few months we are really happy you are here," she professed kissing me on the cheek.
"The pleasure is mine, I couldn't miss it for the world since detective Williams was so kind enough to drop the invitation in person." Detecting the sarcasm in his voice which Val must have assumed for enthusiasm.
"I'll leave you two gentlemen to it. Let me attend to the other guests,"she offered.
"You came in late," I repeated.
Ivan's eyes didn't leave mine for a second. He simply analyzed me in the way he does anytime he suspects someone is hiding something.
"I don't suppose you requested I be your best man. If that was the case I would have been here early. Since Detective Suarez was your best man I don't think that is the reason you wanted me here early," he countered.
Why was it always difficult to deal with the man. At some point I hoped he would come in and stop the wedding yet it would have been terrible. My father would have probably pulled his gun and shot him. Which was a very bad idea. I wouldn't let my father anywhere near Ivan.
"Were you with Vance? Why didn't you bring him here?"
His eye brow shot up a smirk forming on the side of his lips. Before I could stop myself I realized the words I had spoken.
"It's not like I care but you two seemed pretty close, are you dating?"
His chuckle was low and rumbling. A delightful noise that came at the back of his throat with a sexy manly touch. Did I just refer to him as sexy. I had to get a hold of myself I was now a married man no messing around with him anymore.
"I don't see how Vance and I concern you given that you are a married man. I wouldn't want you to ruin my reputation while you are working so hard to keep your woman's.
If you are really concerned with my love life. Let me enlighten you. Vance and I will be engaged soon. He didn't come today since we had some business to do last night and he said he was tired he wanted to get some rest," he clarified.
A sharp ache stang my heart and I had to remind myself to breath before I passed out. Why did I even ask him the stupid questions if he was going to answer them.
Was it jealousy that ate at me while the gorgeous man who stood in front of me made my whole body aflame.
"Congratulations I'm really glad you've found someone who you've known for a few weeks and you are ready to settle down," the words left my mouth involuntarily.
"You are one to speak and we are standing in the middle of your wedding reception where you have just gotten married not more than two hours ago and you are here busy preaching on bad decision making.
Maybe you should take a class or two in critical thinking for you to make saner deductions then point fingers at others," he quietly replied.
"You don't even love him," I argued.
His eyes turned two shades darker and I couldn't tell whether he was going to pull out his gun and shoot me or he was going to strangle me. Veins appeared on his face, his fists clenching, his breath was coming in shallow and he took two steps back from me.
"I think we are done here and for all it counts. Congratulations detective. Enjoy your honeymoon!"
He walked away, his right hand man already on his heels. I saw him put his hand around Ivan's arm and anger that I had never felt before erupted in me. I am the only one who should have been touching him that way.
A voice in my head reminded me that I was now a married man with a wife who would be waiting on me.
"My boy." The voice called pulling me out of my thoughts.
"Hey Chief, hey dad,"I answered.
My father approached me together with the chief who smiled at me widely.
"Congratulations son," wished the Chief. Pulling me for a hug.
"Thank you," I murmured.
"We have good news for you. The Chief is pulling you back into work as soon as you come back from your honeymoon," announced my father proudly.
Even with him saying the words I did not feel as enthusiastic as he did knowing that I would not be in the Prime Minister's daughter investigation. I would be handed another case that would not bring heat to the department. That was how things were handled in the force.
"Why was Mr Bratan here?"asked the chief.
I remained neutral trying not to disclose anything or that the subject of discussion made me uncomfortable.
"He was here to congratulate me and let me know that our agreement has now come to an end and I am free from working for him," I lied.
"That is good. Never let yourself anywhere near that murderer again. Men like him are bad news. You two belong on opposite sides of the law. He is a criminal and you are a law enforcer. Stay away from him we wouldn't want him ruining your reputation," my father said.
I nodded my head not trusting my voice. I wanted to retaliate and tell him Ivan was not a criminal that he was an honorable man but I too knew that was a lie. Maybe he was right. Ivan and I were two opposite sides of a coin. Yin and yang.
Besides I just got married.
