Chapter 40
I heard the church bells pinging down the street as I pulled into the parking spot in front of my parent’s cafe.
I was back. Four months pregnant and absolutely terrified. I never had wanted to return to this town and been content to stay gone forever. Nick didn’t want me. No one but my parents knew I was pregnant.
I’d ended up with a different company in the city the last three months, but when problems from the other company I’d worked for followed me there, I’d run again. This was the only other place I had.
My hand rested on the soft swell of my stomach. I wasn’t majorly showing yet, but with my height and being tiny, it would be sooner rather than later. I was having a very difficult pregnancy and the problems I’d faced hadn’t made it any easier.
I closed my eyes against the memories that were bombarding me. How was I to know that my new boss was so close to my old one?
Stepping out of my car, I stared down the street where people were exiting the church until I saw a familiar form.
Almost like something inside me called to him, his eyes jerked up meeting mine immediately. Widening slightly at the sight of me.
I tried to stop my heart from beating so quickly.
He doesn’t want you, Caroline.
I wish I’d just told him and never left. He was going to be furious if I told him now. Especially if he ever found out what had happened to me while I’d been carrying his baby.
