Chapter 2
Ruhanika's pov
Hello, guys my name is Ruhanika. I am 22 years old and I just completed my graduation in English Literature.
Well my life is nothing fantastic, just a normal upper middle class girl living with her parents and younger brother. Parents who hate her just because she was born a girl.
Well its 6:00, let me get going as I need to start the house chores otherwise I will be gone.
I got freshen up and went downstairs. I started making breakfast for everyone as they have breakfast at 6:45 as my brother has school at 7:30 so he leaves at 7. I made Poha for breakfast along with tea for my parents and bournvita for my brother.
After setting the table, I went to do the cleaning of house. No househelp is appointed as I have to do all the work. My father works in a bank and my mother is a housewife.
I finished the cleaning and then went to the kitchen to eat something. I first cleared the table and then sat to eat the Poha.
The rest of the day went by making lunch and some house chores like doing the dishes and washing clothes etc.
At 1, my brother came from school. Maa was in her room. Shrey came and threw his shoes and bag somewhere and the sprawled on the sofa. As Maa was not here I thought of saying to Shrey to keep things properly.
Ruhanika,"Shrey, aise shoes aur bag kahi bhi rakhna thik nhi. Achhe se rakh do na aur fresh ho k lunch k liye aa jao."
(Shrey, please keep your bag and shoes properly. These are bad manners. And freshen up for lunch.)
Just then Maa came and without any warning slapped me. If not for the sofa beside me, I would have fallen down. The sting was harsh and I got a couple of scratches as well due to Maa's nails.
"How dare you try to give work to my son. Why have we kept you in the house for? Pick up his shoes and bag and keep them in place and serve food to me and my son. Useless girl", Maa said and went to dining table muttering last words.
I did what she said and went to my room. I was not in the mood to eat anything. I filled my stomach with Maa's words. They hate me just because I am a girl. They wanted a boy but I was born and later after a lot of time Shrey was born and they were over the moon. They always kept me away from Shrey and because of that Shrey and I never had a siblings bond.
In the evening, I went to give Maa her tea,"Maa, a-aapki ch-chai. Aur Maa, wo-woh ghar m-mein sabji kh-khatam ho gai h-hai."
(Mother, your tea. And mother, the vegetables are over in the house.)
Maa gave me a look and said,"Aaj toh koi hai nhi jaane wala toh tu hi jaa k le aa".
(Today, no one is free to go and bring them, so you go.)
"M-Maa mein?"
(Mother, me?)
So she was like "Mujhe abhi kuch kaam se jaana hai tabhi varna tujhe ghar se bahar nikalnedene ka koi shauq nai hai mujhe."
(I have to go for some work otherwise I would never let you go out of the house.)
"Yeh le paise aur sun" As I started leaving after taking money, Maa called me, "ek ek paisa ka hisaab chahiye aur sabji leke sidha ghar aana, idhar udhar jaana mat varne Shrey k papa ko pata chala toh teri khair nai". I just nodded and left.
(Here are the money. And listen, I want detail of every rupee spent. And come straight to house after buying veggies, don't roam around. If Shrey's father found out, then no one can save you.)
As I reached the market, I took the needed things amd then as I was about to leave I saw a grandfather. He seemed like he was dizzy and about to fall so I quickly went to him and held him.
"Dadaji, aap thik toh hai?"
(Grandpa, are you okay?)
"Haa beta, bus thode chakar aa gaye"
(Yes child, I just felt a bit dizzy.)
I made him sit on a bench nearby and went to bring a water bottle. "Dadaji yeh pani pijiye"
(Grandpa, water.)
He took a couple of sips.
"Dadaji, aap akele aaye hai toh aapke ghar se kisi ko call kar dijiye na"
(Grandpa, if you are alone then please call someone from your family.)
"Ha beta, main toh bus sair karne aaya tha par pata nhi kaise.., yeh le phone isme se mere Shivansh ko call karde bete aur bula le"
(Yes child, I just came for a stroll. Please call my Shivansh from this phone and call him here.)
"Ji dadaji"
(Yes grandpa.)
I with trembling hands call Mr. Shivansh.
Shivansh- "Hello Dadu"
Ruhanika- "Hello"
Shivansh- "Hello, aap kaun aur mere Dadu ka phone aapke pass kaise?"
(Who are you? And why do you have my grandpa's phone?)
Ruhanika- "Ji w-woh Dadaji yaha sa-sair karne aaye the aur unhe thode chakkar aa gaye, toh aap unhe lene aa jaaye please"
(Grandpa, came for a stroll and he got dizzy. Will you please come to pick him up?)
Shivansh- " Kya?, Dadu thik toh hai aur address dijiye mujhe mein abhi aata hi"
(What? Is my grandpa okay? Please tell me where are you, I am coming.)
Ruhanika- "Ji woh thik hai aur Shivaji park k pass wale market mein aa jaiye"
(We are at the market near Shivaji park.)
He cut the call instantly and I returned phone to Dadaji.
Then Dadaji asked me about myself like my name, age, family etc. Dadaji is so nice and I am sure his family would also be nice unlike mine.
We kept talking and suddenly realized that almost 30 mins had passed so I panicked about reaching home on time but then thought,"Dadaji ko akele nai chhod sakti, Maa se kahungi toh woh shayad samjhenge".
(I can't leave Grandpa here. Mother will understand when I will tell her.)
Dadaji told me about his family. He lost his elder son at a young age. He loves his eldest grandson, Shivansh, a little more than his other grandchildern. And he also told me about Dadiji and from his talk I concluded that he loves dadiji a lot.
After a while Mr. Shivansh came, "Dadu aap thik toh hai kya hua tha aapko aise akele kyu aaye kuch ho jaata toh"
(Grandpa, are you okay? What happened? Why did you come alone? Anything could have happened)
He hurridly started asking questions. Dadu calmed him down amd then told about me. He greeted me and extended hi hand for handshake but I couldn't shake hand, with trembling hands I joint my hands in namaste before him.
He removed his hand and did namaste.
After that I told Dadaji to take care amd left.
