Thirty-Nine
Nameless
She looks in a mirror and sees no reflection.
She’s lost everything, gone without detection.
There’s no fire in her soul.
No collateral
To hold against her
Because she no longer cares,
No longer sees
Just how beautiful they used to be.
They are faceless ghosts –
Vague memories
That ring with a banshee’s shriek.
They are waveless coasts –
Broken ships
That sink with a lover’s leap.
Into the sea.
The Dead Sea.
Where nothing floats
But a bitter need
To rise above the pain
With ecstacy.
And so she takes
And she takes
And she takes
Down on her knees
For Heaven’s keys.
Only to burn in a lake of fire,
Too godsdamn tired
To swim to shore.
And so she takes
And she takes
And she takes some more
But each high gets shorter
And each fall gets longer
And each attempt to forget
Gets harder and harder
And so she takes
And she takes
and she takes some more
opening her mouth
to the devil’s sweet allure
until there’s nothing left
not even a shadow
of her pride or her fire or her stubborn need
to be anything other than down on her knees
and still she takes
she takes
she takes
she fucking takes
because she still feels the pain
and she’ll do anything
fucking anything
to make it wane
