Chapter 7
Chapter Seven
Knight
“WHY?” Jenna yells out.
“We’re going to find out,” I promise, but keep the second part to myself.
I’m gonna kill them first.
I will not let anything hurt her or my club. Funny how she suddenly outranks the men around me that I consider my brothers. That’s what a real old lady is. The keeper of your heart and soul. I stare at her as my whole world revolves around her in the center.
“Knight?” Pirate must have asked me a question.
“Yeah,” I say, only sparing him a glance.
“You good?” What a loaded fucking question.
“I’m fucking great. Just need to kill the motherfuckers wanting to hurt my old lady.” The guys start pounding the table in agreement, and Jenna jumps into my arms, startled.
“Shh, they’re just agreeing to protect you,” I whisper in her ear.
“I don’t need protecting. I need out of this mess. I did not sign up for any of this bullshit.” She pushes my arms away and leaves the room.
“Go handle that.” Pirate grins at me with merriment filling his one eye.
Fucker’s got jokes. He’s going to enjoy this just as much as I did when he fell for Gen. I walk out of Church and find Jenna holding my godson, and suddenly I remember we never made it to the Pharmacy.
Damn, she looks good holding a baby.
Maybe the condom breaking was a sign from God that she’s the future mother of my children. I mean, who am I to go against God’s master plan? I’m a good Catholic boy after all. My family can’t keep up their shit if I marry her and bring home a baby.
A plan forms in my head as I watch her bounce Zac in her arms.
“He’s a chunker.” Jenna blows raspberries on his cheeks and Zac giggles.
“All he does is eat. Zek says he’s a boob man for life. I fear for his future wife.” The women chuckle as Jenna finds me watching them.
“I’m ready to go.” She hands the baby back to his mother and crosses her arms.
“Sorry, no can do. We have targets on our backs. You’re not leaving this building.” Her face turns red, and I think I can see smoke coming out of her ears.
“I’m fucking leaving, Troy. You can not keep me here.” She stomps to the door, which is blocked by one of the prospects.
“Move,” she hisses at the tool.
What is that one’s name again? Right, Torque, because he’s wound too tight.
“No ma’am. VP said you stay.” I grin at the fool not paying attention to my old lady who’s about to lay him out.
“Fucking watch me.” Her hand shoots out and nails him in the nose, followed by a knee to the stomach.
When his head is in range from him doubling over, she elbows it, and he falls flat on the ground. She calmly walks over him like he’s nothing more than a pebble under her boots.
“Jenna, if you open that door without Spector’s clearance, the armed guards outside will open fire.” She hesitates with her palm on the knob.
“You’re lying.” I don’t even bother arguing with her.
“Knight can’t lie for shit. Horrible poker face too. Hello, gorgeous. I’m Flip, the club’s Treasurer. I heard from the prospects at the gate that I missed some action tonight.” The man pulls his kippah off his head, wiping away the makeup and revealing his bald, tattooed head.
“So, he can come in, but I can’t leave?” Jenna asks in disbelief.
“He is wearing our colors. You are not.” Yet.
I keep that to myself for now so she doesn’t take my head off.
“I have work and classes this week. I have no clothes. Kelly will worry. I need my bike!” She keeps listing all the things she needs to do and her responsibilities.
“Babe, stop. All I care about is keeping you safe. I’ll send one of the tools to get your stuff.
Make a list. We’ll get you to and from work, where you will be watched, no exceptions.
Better yet, take vacation time until we figure this out so we don’t endanger anyone else.
Your classes, I’m sure we can swing. Just let me protect you, please.
” I walk to her slowly and take a risk, gripping her hands in mine.
“I don’t need your protection.” She points at Torque, who is still knocked out.
“Jenna, this is life or death. Please don’t push me away right now. If anything were to happen to you-” I cut myself off as emotions I can’t name fill my throat, stealing my words.
“You’re really worried.” She pulls me into her arms and hugs me tightly.
“More than I can possibly explain.” It’s as much as I’m willing to admit out loud.
When the realization that you can’t live without someone in your life hits you during a time of crisis, the word ‘love’ seems to be meaningless. I’m not sure the word has been invented that can accurately describe the feelings I have for this woman, and frankly, they scare the shit out of me.
“There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do to keep you safe.” She nods and kisses my head.
“Okay, I’ll stay.” Flip slaps my shoulder and chuckles.
“How the mighty have fallen.” He chuckles as he walks away.
“What is she, a medium? I’ll get her cut ordered.” He calls over his shoulder as he strolls off towards Church, where everyone is still discussing what went down tonight.
Jenna lets me go and reaches for her cellphone in her back pocket.
“I’m calling the hospital. I have ten days of PTO I’m losing if I don’t take them. That’s how long you have to fix this. My classes, I will not cancel.” I love how fiercely devoted to the women’s shelter she volunteers at she is.
“Thank you.” She nods, walking away to place her call.
Torque starts to move, and I kick him in the ribs.
“Get up. Grab a few more Tools for the Box and head over to this address. I’ll send you a list of shit to pack shortly.” I text him the info as he sits up, nodding while rubbing the back of his head.
“That woman has a mean elbow.” I grin.
Don’t I know it.
