Chapter 8
Chapter Eight
Jenna
Ihang up with the HR voicemail requesting a personal leave of absence due to a family emergency. It was the best I could come up with on short notice. Better than saying my biker husband got me marked for death by an unknown enemy and needs a few days to work it out.
I call Kelly next cause I trust Troy’s men as far as I can throw them.
“Hey, girl. Did he rock your world, stealing your ability to walk, so you need a ride?” She giggles at herself.
“Close, I’m moving in with him for two weeks.” The line goes quiet.
“Damn, I’ve never had dick that good.” I roll my eyes.
“It’s a long story, and I can’t get into it, but a few guys in the vest he wears are stopping by to get my stuff. Can you run over and pack me a bag? Ten days’ worth of clothes, toiletries, and whatnot.” Kelly shuffles around on her end before talking.
“Jenna, tell me he’s taking you on a fabulous vacation abroad and not kidnapping you because I will not be an accessory,” I smirk at her words.
“Sure, it’s a vacation.” She snorts on her end, but I hear keys jingling, meaning she’s heading to my apartment down the hall.
“Sure, I believe that. I’ll skip the sunscreen and bikini. Are you safe?” I sigh, not knowing how to answer that.
“Currently, yes.” She curses.
“I’ll pack your taser and gun.” God bless her.
“I love you something fierce, bitch.” I turn back to Troy, who is now speaking to Pirate, who’s come out of the large dining room area they call Church.
“You fucking better. Wipe this thing down before you use it. I don’t want my print on it.” I chuckle as I say thanks and hang up.
“Kelly is packing my stuff. I don’t want your guys rummaging through my lingerie.” I cross my arms, waiting to hear what the plan is here.
“What did you tell her?” I arch a brow.
“Nothing. That I was staying with you for two weeks and needed clothes.” Pirate turns to look at me.
“Does she know where the clubhouse is?” What the fuck?
“I don’t even know where it is, and I’m standing in it. What the hell is going on?” I can’t hide my irritation any longer.
“We’re trying to determine who is after you and why. One of you was followed tonight since this was a spontaneous outing. So it’s a fifty-fifty split of who the enemy is after.” Spector says, flipping through a folder with my name on it.
“You have a file on me?” I try to snatch it, but Troy grabs me from behind, locking my arms at my side.
“Babe, it’s his job to protect us. He has files on everyone here.” That does not help me feel better.
“It’s an invasion of privacy.” I hiss at the tall man with death eyes.
No wonder they call him Spector.
“Nothing is private in my line of work. I know what you ate, when you took a shit, and the exact time this fucker came on that beach. I’m very good at my job. It’s why I’ll figure out who is after you and why.” Did he just really say that out loud?
I glance over my shoulder at Troy, who is glaring daggers at the man.
“Too far, Castel.” Pirate hisses.
The men both stare at Spector, who finally raises a hand in surrender.
“Apologies.” He nods at me, then walks away.
“Get your cousin in check,” Troy says to Pirate, who follows Spector down a hallway.
“That’s Zek’s cousin?” I’m failing to see the family resemblance.
“Yeah, and Sprocket is his younger brother. Castel takes after his father. But their moms were sisters.” Damn, the way he says that makes my chest tighten.
“Will you tell me the story someday?” He nods and pulls me to a set of stairs.
“The living quarters are upstairs. Pirate and I have private suites as the heads of the club. The other guys who live on site have to share bathrooms. I’ll show you ours.” He smirks as he says it, but I quickly correct him.
“Your room. I’m a temporary guest.” He chuckles as he pushes open his door.
“Agree to disagree, babe.” I walk in and stop dead in my tracks.
“Wow, okay, I was not expecting this.” The room is huge and open, with a window high up that must bring in beautiful natural light during the day.
Troy hits a switch, and the soft glow illuminates the shadows, showing off the dark masculine tones of the leather couch, tables, and mantel.
“Electric?” I walk over to the fireplace with a large screen TV mounted above it.
“Gas actually. It gets cold in these corner units in the winter. The bathroom floors are heated too.” I should have known his bougie ass would only have the best in his home.
“Troy, this is easily a few million-dollar apartment in today’s market.” He shrugs and smiles as he looks around proudly.
“You know Dad’s a contractor. He cut us a great deal when we built this place.” He makes it sound like it’s no big deal, but unless his dad charged him one dollar, I ain’t buying it.
“What does the club do for money?” He waves my question off, but I am not giving up that easily.
“Troy, answer me, or I walk.” I ain’t staying with a bunch of outlaw bikers without knowing what I’m getting myself into.
I already have a target on my back.
“Imports and exports.” I chuckle without humor.
“Okay, Tony Montana. Guns, drugs, women, oh god if you say children,” I back away from this man that I really know nothing about.
“Calm down, babe. No women or kids. We actively stop that shit from hitting the city. Wizard does have a legal marijuana farm in Jersey. We own several businesses, but guns were largely our business early on in the seventies. We’ve invested well and now earn most of our money from Spector’s security business.
” I search his face to see if he’s joking, but his eyes are set.
“You’re serious. You’re going to stand there and tell me you took the money the club earned from running guns and invested it into a stock portfolio that has you living on waterfront property in an apartment that’s the equivalent of a penthouse on the Upper East Side?” He shrugs but nods.
“I mean, Flip can explain it better. I only know the basics.” Unfucking real.
“Can he look at my investments. I’d like to live like this.” I meant it as a joke of disbelief as I look around more.
“Babe, I told you. This is yours now, too. If you want it. I will never force you.” I hear metal tink and turn to see he placed a key on the marble countertop, pushing it towards me with one finger.
“After this is handled, you can come and go as you please. No expectations.” I open my mouth and close it, not sure what to say.
Thank you isn’t exactly what I want to convey right now, but I feel like I need to say something.
“Let me sleep on it?” He smiles and nods.
“Master suite is through there.” He points behind me.
