Chapter 33

HANNA

“Ispoke to Reverend Michaels this morning at the farmer’s market, and he said he knows a minister of a good congregation in Providence you should check out. The church is young and hip,” Hanna’s mother said and poured milk into her coffee.

They were sitting at the breakfast table.

Her father was diligently eating his cornflakes in silence, as he always did.

His brown hair had greyed in places and thinned considerably.

Even though it had only been a month since graduation, she couldn’t help but continue to notice the way her parents seemed to have aged since she last saw them over the winter holidays.

That was the thing no one told you: while you are growing up and getting older, everyone around you is, too.

She had been shocked to see the silver strands in her mother’s brown hair.

Her fringe bangs were peppered with grey and white, and there was a layer of what Hanna could only describe as “age” on her pale skin.

“Thanks Mom, we shall see if church is for me when I get there.”

“Well, there’s a band and everything, and they make their own music too, very rock and roll,” her mother pushed, as Hanna knew she would.

“It might be good for you to meet some new people your age, especially since you won’t really know anyone—” she paused, then added, “besides your roommates. Have you figured out who they are going to be yet?”

Hanna hadn’t told her parents anything, only that she’d gotten a job in Providence and would be taking a gap year before deciding if she wanted to fully go into medical school or do research.

She had the grades for Brown’s medical school too, should she decide that’s where she wanted to apply.

In the meantime, she would be working at Planned Parenthood’s Southern New England office as a research and policy clinician.

This had also been a bit of a test, revealing where she was working to her parents.

Her dad hadn’t really said much, which was expected, and she could tell that while her mother perhaps didn’t love the idea, she had latched onto the thought of Hanna continuing on to medical school.

“I have some ideas, talking with some people to see if we click…” Hanna hated lying, but she told herself it wouldn’t be for that much longer. The summer would end, and her mom would find out.

“Okay well, let us know, we want you to be safe. We know you’re an adult now, but you’re still our baby,” her mom cooed a bit on the last word.

“Of course, I have explicitly explained that I am NOT okay with living with a serial killer or killers,” Hanna said, and her mom scoffed and waved Hanna away playfully with one hand.

In another universe, Hanna was blurting out, “Just kidding! I am moving in with my two girlfriends, because surprise, I’m bi and apparently like my lovers in twos.

” But of course she didn’t say that. Instead she went up to her room determined to pack but instead climbed on her bed and escaped into a swoony sapphic romance — these have really turned into my thing.

“Uh fuck, yes, right there, Jesus, don’t stop—” Some of Hanna’s hair was plastered over her forehead and she could feel the rest of it sticking to her neck and back.

“Mmmm I don’t know about Jesus, you better know who you’re in bed with, church girl,” Lily whispered, her fingers expertly moving in Hanna, her thumb rubbing just enough of her clit.

“Lily!”

“Mmmm better babe, don’t worry, I know where you need me, right here.” She pressed down further into Hanna, stretching her in a way that made her ankles flex.

“Fuck I’m going to come,” Hanna said, her orgasm building.

“No you won’t, not like this Banana,” Maya said from where she was, naked, behind her. She had a leg on either side of Hanna and when Hanna looked back she could see that Maya was slowly stroking herself, looking down at her with heavy-lidded eyes.

“No I won’t, not yet,” Hanna repeated and fuck yes she loved it when Maya told her what to do.

“Not until you’ve tasted me,” Maya said, and Hanna let out a moan because Lily hadn’t stopped fucking her, and that coupled with watching Maya touch herself was going to send her over the edge.

“Hurry, I need it, need you now,” Hanna said, as Maya got up on her knees and lowered herself onto Hanna’s face.

She loved having Maya like this, completely surrounded by the smell of her, the taste of her, the heat of her.

And Hanna showed it in the way she tongued her, her tongue sliding over Maya’s slickness to greet her clit.

“Like that, good girl,” she heard Maya moan.

Ever since they’d discovered Hanna had a praise kink, they had to use it sparingly because that’s all it took to light her up. Hanna came, moaning into Maya. She felt Maya twitch on top of her, and then slide off and roll over on the bed.

Hanna loved it when this happened; she was still tingly all over and cooling down but turned her head in time to watch a naked Lily climb on top of Maya and fit her body to hers.

“God I love fucking you two, my girls so good for me,” Lily said as she began riding Maya to her own orgasm, which didn’t take long. The sight was unbelievably hot, her two women naked together. It was like live porn or her own personal sex dungeon.

“I swear I have never had success with scissoring like I have with you,” Maya said, panting as Lily rolled off of her and they lay on the bed breathing heavily, Lily and Maya side by side and Hanna at their feet.

Nights in the treehouse were everything this summer.

They were the reason Hanna had been so excited to come home for the summer instead of working back in Boston.

She supposed she, Maya, and Lily could have all found work in the city or stayed in Maya’s apartment, but being with Maya and Lily, occasionally working on the orchard — she knew Diana would put that in heavy quotes— and sleeping where it all began felt right.

Plus it was a great way to see if moving in together was happening too fast. Lily always joked that she never thought she’d fit the U-Haul stereotype, and here she was doing it times two.

“Holy shit,” Lily breathed, “it just never gets old.”

“If anything, it keeps getting better and better,” Maya said.

Hanna moved up the bed and squeezed herself between the two women. Their bodies were slick with sweat and without AC, the summer humidity clung to them. Hanna didn’t care, she leaned into them. She felt like every time she was sinking deeper and deeper in a dream, one where she felt so damn free.

“I love you both,” she said quietly, and as if they’d rehearsed, Lily and Maya both sat up on their arms and turned to face her.

“I love you Lilith, and I love you Maya,” Hanna said again, louder this time with what she hoped was a certainty that left no room for doubt.

Because she had never been so certain of anything in her life.
