Chapter 7 The Cake
The next evening, Ye Wangbai came back.
He brought flowers and cake.
As soon as he got home, he asked what I wanted for dinner.
Were my legs sore? Did I want a massage?
Gentle and attentive, just like always.
From last night until now, I’d felt pain, heartbreak, rage, jealousy, unwillingness…
All those dark emotions nearly broke me.
I had so many questions I wanted to ask him.
But suddenly, I felt there was no need.
What was there to ask?
A man who cheated during his wife’s pregnancy was already completely rotten and filthy.
Like leftovers left in the fridge overnight.
On the surface it still looked edible, but just one whiff made you sick.
I ate the cake slowly, pretending to ask casually, “This is really good. Song Mei picked it out, right?”
Song Mei was the woman he was seeing behind my back. We’d met once at the wedding when he called her his distant cousin.
Half an hour earlier, Song Mei had posted on her Moments.
A bouquet of red roses and a photo of this dessert.
Captioned with two hearts.
She said nothing outright, but it was a silent show-off and provocation.
It seemed she couldn’t wait anymore.
She was eager for me to die soon so she could become Mrs. Ye.
