Chapter 13 She… Is Dead

The dare was simple.

I told Song Mei to go pick a handful of cherry blossoms for me.

“Tang Xi, it's so dark. I'm a little scared. Can Ye Wangbai come with me?”

“Of course,” I stood up and smiled. “I'm tired. I'll go rest first. You two come back soon after picking the flowers. It's dangerous outside.”

After a long day, I fell asleep quickly.

I had a dream.

In the dream I gave birth to an adorable boy and girl.

I was playing outside with them.

Suddenly a car sped toward us—

“No!”

I screamed and jolted awake.

The tent was empty.

I checked my phone. Three in the morning. Ye Wangbai still hadn't returned.

Sleep was gone. I got up and went to Song Mei's tent.

Empty too.

So I messaged Ye Wangbai.

“Ye Wangbai, it's very late. You and Song Mei come back soon. We can pick flowers tomorrow.”

The message went out, but the whole night Ye Wangbai never replied.

After waiting several hours, when the sky began to lighten, he finally appeared.

Ye Wangbai looked awful.

Dark circles and stubble after one sleepless night.

I looked behind him. “Why are you back only now? Where's Song Mei?”

His face was deathly pale.

He opened his mouth, then closed it again.

Under my urging, it took him a long while before he spoke in a trembling voice.

“She… is dead.”

“What?”

I was shocked and immediately took out my phone. “I'm calling the police right now!”

“No!”

Ye Wangbai panicked, snatched my phone, and threw it to the ground.

Under my puzzled gaze, he finally confessed helplessly.

“I suspect… I accidentally killed her.

“Last night we drank, and my head was dizzy.

“When we found the cherry tree, it was very tall. I told her to stand below while I climbed up to pick the flowers.

“But I slipped and fell from the tree.”

By then I already vaguely guessed what happened.

“And then?”

“After I fell, I passed out. When I woke up just now, I found Song Mei lying under me… already… no breath.”

Saying this, he suddenly gripped my hand tightly.

“Tang Xi, help me. I don't want to go to prison! I still need to take care of you and the babies. I want to see them born…”
