Chapter 5 The Kitchen Puzzle

WTF?

That old guy stole my stuff??

No.

I instinctively touched my wrist and paused. "But my Red String is right here on my hand!"

He Tingzhou grabbed my wrist.

"Let me see."

Comparing the two strings, the differences were obvious.

"The wooden carving on yours is a gold ingot. The one on the boss is a peach blossom." He Tingzhou asked, "Is there some meaning to it?"

I looked carefully too and confirmed they came from the same source.

I explained, "This Red String was prayed for at a temple in the suburbs. I wished for wealth. The boss probably wished for romance."

"Hey, wait."

I thought of something and frowned. "The boss has a partner. They've been together for a while. Why would he pray for romance?"

He Tingzhou said, "Maybe it's a couple's set."

I shook my head.

"This is a wish Red String. Once you get what you wished for, you take it off."

He Tingzhou glanced at my Red String again.

"So your gold ingot..."

I got embarrassed.

"Shut up!"

He really knew how to poke where it hurt.

I hadn't gotten rich yet!

He Tingzhou pressed his lips to hold back a smile and told his colleague to try contacting the boss's partner.

"Do you have any other clues?" He Tingzhou asked me again. "There was no surveillance in the kitchen, and the boss was a key target in our investigation. His death will complicate things."

Key target?

I blinked. "Is it related to the prohibited stuff you mentioned?"

He Tingzhou hummed lightly.

"Yes, so think hard. Stop bringing up the kitchen and Malatang!"

But then I realized something strange.

"From what I know, the boss had a serious cleanliness obsession."

He Tingzhou paused.

"So...?"

"So why did he die in the kitchen?"

I was confused.

"A cleanliness freak like him, what reason would make him go into a greasy, dirty kitchen?"
