Chapter 20 A Deadly Phone Call
I grinned stupidly for a couple seconds. Before I could reply, my phone rang. It was Liu Liu.
I remembered then that we had plans for dinner. I answered quickly.
"Lu Xiaoning, have you decided what to eat tonight?"
I checked the time. I could still nap and make it. So I said, "How about the hotpot place from our university days?"
Liu Liu didn't mind. "See you tonight."
After hanging up, I texted He Tingzhou to soothe him and report my plans. Then I showered and rested.
At seven that evening, I arrived at the hotpot restaurant on time. Liu Liu was already waiting in the private room. When she saw me, she sighed. "You haven't changed a bit. Still so slim and pretty."
I laughed. "Come on. We've only been out of school for three months. How much could I change? You, on the other hand, look like you've lost a lot of weight since graduation."
"Thanks for the concern, miss~" Liu Liu smiled and passed me the tablet. "Order whatever you want, miss."
Liu Liu and I weren't in the same major in college, but we were in the same club. We got along well. Seeing her doing fine at work and life made me happy for her.
It was almost nine after dinner. We strolled out of the restaurant. Liu Liu asked, "How are you getting home? Want a ride?"
I looked at the car keys in her hand and raised an eyebrow. I was about to answer when a car horn beeped nearby.
I looked over and smiled. "No need. Someone's picking me up."
Liu Liu looked and teased with a grin. "Wow, that trip to the station paid off. Someone's falling head over heels!"
I coughed dryly and waved her off. "Gotta go."
I jogged over to the car. Seeing the figure step out, I raised an eyebrow and smiled. "Officer He, what brings you here? Am I a suspect again?"
He Tingzhou crossed his arms and looked at me pointedly. "Not that. I'm here to collect on a debt."
I played innocent. "What debt?"
He Tingzhou stepped closer, draped his jacket over my shoulders, and let his fingertips graze my chin. "A debt of the heart."
I burst out laughing. "You're such a dummy."
Laughter filled He Tingzhou's eyes too. He was about to speak when his phone rang suddenly. He checked it, and his expression shifted. "It's from the station."
As he took the call, the smile in his eyes vanished.
When he hung up, he looked down at me, his gaze heavy.
"Something happened."
"Li Sheng'an's girlfriend, Miss Chen—she's dead."
