Chapter 75 Penny
Chapter 75
Penny
She stands beside Leo, proud of their decision.
“I just overheard Henry make a generous offer to save the inn.” Leo glances at Penny, his arm around her waist. “We’d also like to invest. We can’t let you give up this place either. It’s too important. It holds too many memories. It’s our second home. We’re family.”
Leo gazes into Penny’s eyes. Blue. Brown. She has never loved those eyes more. The differences. The then and now. All they possess. All they have seen.
Renée looks about to cry. Jean-Paul hugs her close. “We can’t let you do that,” she says to Leo.
“Yes, you can. It’s time you let us give you what you’ve given to us.”
“We’ll discuss it,” Jean-Paul says. “After we make some wishes. After we have some cake.”
And one by one, they light the candles. Rosalie, hand in hand with her cousin, Simone, skips past each cake with a smile and a wish. Henry smudges his name with a finger, and Leo and Penny blow out the candle beside a bride and groom. And that leaves Sienna and her cake. There’s a star—a big bright sun—and M&M’s strewn about like little planets. The inscription reads: Anything is possible. Wish big.
Penny feels a joy she hasn’t felt in months. She turns to Leo, flashing back to their bodies in bed. “You were wrong earlier. This is better.”
