Chapter 50

Sydney - On the Road (Again)

I took my last road trip with Austin before our lives got turned upside down by the recording industry. It seemed like a simpler time. I know you can never go backwards, and I don’t regret the time I spent living that surreal lifestyle of fame and excess. I was sure it affected me in ways I didn’t even know yet.

For the first few days, I waited for Austin to call. When he didn’t, I felt relieved and upset at the same time. I wanted him to come find me, but I wanted to be left alone. I can’t have it both ways.

Turned out Samson loved to travel. He napped while I sang along to my favorite CDs or rested his chin on the open window to smell all the smells coming from the ocean. The seagulls fascinated him. I brought my beach chair and a book, and we watched the sun go down together.

Over the course of a few weeks, we moseyed our way up Highway One. We discovered a hostel in San Francisco and stayed there for a few days. Then we stayed at one in Seattle. The people I met at the hostels welcomed me and made me feel at home. I talked or texted with Abby daily, telling her about my latest adventures. I sent Venus, Daisy and Tori postcards from Seattle.
