Chapter 13
Nessa
“Girl I’m takin’ twenty-five shots tonight, one for each year on Earth!” Yas gushed as she got dressed.
“That’s exactly why I’m drivin’,” I chuckled as I made my way downstairs.
This night out was needed because the week I had worn me thin.
Between working and taking care of both Nyla and Chanel, I needed a night to myself.
I didn’t plan to go as hard as Yas planned to because it was her birthday, but I was gonna enjoy myself.
It’ll take my mind off stressing about where Nas was, thinking about my breakup, and caring for the girls.
My mom agreed to watch them over here, so I’d cleared out my house of any alcohol I had before bringing her over.
“You sure you got the girls?” I asked her when I joined them in the kitchen.
“I am sure, Vanessa,” she scoffed before raising her hand. “You ask me that again I’ma pop you. It does have me wonderin’ where their dads are.”
“Had to go handle some business.”
“Ok, well make sure you enjoy yourself because the girls are safe here.”
“Thank you, Ma.”
“Of course. You look so beautiful.”
“I do?” I asked as I did a little spin in my dress.
The colorful bodycon dressed wrapped around my body to perfection.
I ordered it offline the day Yas told me her birthday plans.
I’d paired it with some gold heels and accessories.
The around the neck design had my breast sitting up perfectly, and I had to agree with my mom because I did look beautiful.
“Been a while since I got cute and stepped out.”
“I know I wasn’t the best mother growin’ up so I’m probably the last person you wanna take advice from.
I still just want to tell you to still pour into yourself and not get lost in just motherhood.
I know you were young when you had her and hell bent on not being anything like me, but I know how it can feel to lose yourself and I don’t want that for you.
Always remember to have a moment where you can be just Vanessa, ok? ”
“I needed to hear that, Ma. Thank you. I’m goin’ to keep that in mind.”
“Good. Now go have fun.”
When we made it to the club, I learned that Yas secured a section for us to enjoy the night it.
Once we made it to the section, she wasted no time ordering us a bottle.
Her custom light blue dress fit her to perfection from the style to the way it hugged her body.
The bottle girls came back with the sign and sparklers along with her bottle as I recorded my girl basking in her moment.
After she knocked three of her twenty-five shots back, I decided to enjoy myself since we were more put away.
Following her lead I downed three shots of Don Julio.
“That’s what the fuck I’m talkin’ ‘bout!” Yas exclaimed before high fiving me. “Tonight we forget ‘bout the world and enjoy ourselves.”
“Let’s fuckin’ do it!” I agreed before pouring another round of shots.
I passed her one before holding my glass up.
“Happy Birthday to the best friend in the whole wide world, my ace boon coon, my diary and most importantly my fuckin’ sister from another mister.
I love you like I birthed you my girl, and I pray this year is everythin’ you deserve. Again, happy birthday!”
We hit our glasses together before hitting them on the table then tossing the liquor in our mouth.
When they started playing Ball Greezy we turned up like it was just us in the club.
The weight I carried on my shoulders disappeared as I vibed to my favorite Miami rapper.
The DJ started playing my favorite song by him Nice & Slow, and just as I was about to start dancing on Yas my damn phone started ringing.
When I saw that it was Nas, I answered to make sure that he was alright.
“Where the fuck you at?” He interrogated before I could even say anything.
“Hello to you too Nas,” I rolled my eyes as if he could see me. “Are you callin’ for Nyla? If so, call tomorrow I’m not with her right now.”
“I figured that much because of the loud ass music. Now I’m goin’ to ask again where the hell you at, Vanessa?”
“If you must know Nasir, I’m at the club enjoyin’ my-fuckin’-self. Nyla and Chanel are at my house with my mama. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to get back to enjoyin’ my night. Bye Nas.”
That felt good to put his ass in his place when it came to me.
Nas was so used to me only working, being a mom, and in the house, so he probably didn’t think I clubbed.
I looked over at Yas who was sipping her drink while looking at me.
Shrugging my shoulders, I grabbed the bottle and took it to the head.
This wasn’t going to fuck up my night, and when 25 by Rod Wave started playing, we were back turnt as we sung along to it at the top of our lungs.
Two hours later, my girl was ready to leave, and I was thankful because these heels were cute but not comfortable.
As we made our way towards my car, I made sure to be aware of our surroundings.
Once we made it there, I helped Yas in the car before getting in.
When I got inside, I tried to start the car, but it didn’t even turn on.
Popping the trunk, I lifted the hood to see what the hell was going on.
“What the fuck?!” I gasped when I noticed that my whole fucking battery was missing out of my car.
“What’s wrong?” Yas yelled from the car.
“My fuckin’ battery gone!”
“What the fuck?!” she expressed before getting out to come stand by me. “Nessa, where the hell did yo’ battery go? How the fuck we got here if yo’ battery wasn’t in there?”
“It was in there, but I don’t know where the fuck it is now.”
“What we gonna do?”
“I don’t wanna call his ass but I’ma text Nas. You know he gonna come.”
“Yep, that nigga ain’t gonna leave his baby mama stranded especially lookin’ as good as you do.”
“You know that nigga can be petty so let me get in the car cause we may be here for a lil’ minute, but I’m textin’ him.”
I made my way back to the driver’s seat as I texted Nas letting him know I was stranded.
While I waited for him to reply, some guys came over when they saw the hood in the air.
The one that was leading the group over was fine as fuck.
His two friends were standing by the front of the car while he made his way towards me.
“Aye, you need some help, beautiful?” He asked before licking his lips.
“Not much really can be done,” I admitted as I got out the car so he could get a full view of the bad bitch I was. “Somebody stole my battery.”
“That’s fucked up. Me and my boys could give you and yo’ homegirl a ride.”
“Nawl, my nigga she in good hands like Allstate ‘round this muthafucka,” Nas answered for me as he appeared out of nowhere. My ass was too tipsy to even protest and when he placed his gun under the guy’s chin, I sobered up immediately.
That’s when I looked around and noticed Chance standing between the other two friends with guns at their heads.
Looking in the car, Yas’ ass seemed to have sobered up too as she sat up looking at the scene before us.
I looked back at the guy and Nas, who was sizing me up and down. “Ain’t you good baby mama?”
“Yeah, I’m good,” I answered as we stared at one another.
“Now y’all boys can get the fuck on or get put the fuck down. The choice is yours.”
The guys didn’t say anything, instead all three of them backed away slowly.
Once they were gone, Nas had put his gun away, but he was still staring me down.
The silence between us felt so heavy as I waited to see what was going to happen next.
Movement out of the corner of my eye caused me to look away and at Yas.
She’d got out and was leaning on my hood.
“Did you come with a battery or you just gonna stand there droolin’ over my girl,” Yas drunk ass blurted out. “You see that other nigga was droolin’ just like you ‘cause my girl looks the fuck good, don’t she?”
“She does,” Nas confessed causing my head to snap back in his direction. “That nigga would’ve lost his life tonight had anything wrong fell from his lips.”
“Yo’ ass had the other two droolin’ like they’d just got hypnotized by the sky and they were ‘bout to be livin’ in the sky,” Chance chimed in as he moved closure to Yas. “Happy Birthday, Yasmine.”
“Chance, back yo’ ass up before you get knocked out by the sky nigga but thank you.”
“You swea’ you hate a nigga, but I know you frontin’. I’ma keep my birthday gift since you bein’ mean.”
“Aht, aht. Come up off that.”
I was still stuck on what Nas had said while I watched their interaction ready to see what he got her.
Honestly, I wished they’d get together but Yas was hesitant because she didn’t want to ruin her relationship with Chanel if they didn’t work out.
Which I felt like was selfless of her because Chanel truly enjoyed spending time with Yas.
When he handed Yas a wad of money, I couldn’t see her reaction because Nas turned my head back towards him.
“You really do look good,” he expressed again this time directly to me.
“Thanks,” I gulped before I found my footing to gain control of the conversation. “Like my girl asked do you have a battery? And why you ain’t text back that you were comin’?”
“Why so you could have that nigga out yo’ face before I came? Nawl, I needed to see you in yo’ element enjoyin’ yo’-fuckin’-self. I didn’t get a battery, but my car is not too far. I’ll drive you back home.”
“Ok.”
The ride back to my house was a quiet one while me and Yas sat in the back seat.
When we made back, Nas pulled into his driveway before opening the door for my side.
Chance did the same before they helped us out.
Chance asked Yas for her key so he could drop her off home while Nas never let go of my hand.
Once they were leaving out of the neighborhood, I focused my attention back on Nas who was still holding my hand.
