We have been stalking this fool for days now. He tells us he is going out with no explanation, and the moment he starts his bike, we are both out the door and down the road where the rental car is parked.
I did put a tracker on his bike. It was the most reasonable way to track him; Mike suggested putting it in his neck instead. For a moment, I will admit, I did entertain the idea. This man has taken me out of my clothes, and it is not in the fun way his brother does.
This will be bad for all of us when we leave and someone suspects the mysterious dude Jessica was sneaking around with for the murders. He must know that. He can't be that stupid.
“I was meaning to talk to you about something,” I start, in an attempt to take my mind off the guy we are stalking and his whore.
“Yeah? What’s that?” Mike responds with pretend curiosity.
“The night before you killed Mary, I had a conversation with her. I kinda think you might benefit from the information I gathered. You know, in the slight possibility that some guilt has reached you after she bled out,” I explain.
He doesn’t talk, but the look in his eyes tells me everything I need to know. My man has been tormenting himself after her death—mainly because, I think, deep down both of the twins wanted to believe the sob story Mary told them.
“She knew your parents died,” I tell him.
His eyes grow wide. “You must be kidding!”
“That is not all. She never wanted you. The only reason she went to her sister was the fact that she knew she would turn her over to their parents. She was so young that it would cause a scandal. Her parents would have done everything in their power to prevent that, and she was counting on it.”
His eyes wander out the window toward the empty parking lot. He is not going to say anything else; this is his way of letting me know the conversation has ended.
The rain is getting heavy, and the sound of it washes away all the pain and suffering. It is almost cathartic in a way. We sit in silence, watching the diner.
It is mostly empty. Liam is sitting at his regular booth, and from time to time, Jess goes to sit with him for a few minutes before returning to her regular duties. They are getting comfortable.
