15. CHAPTER #3

Mr. Heiss started to snap back but fell into a frustrated silence, clearly aware that Indy could twist innuendo out of anything he said.

Indy just grinned.

Buffy and Dill had wandered into the greenhouse, Buffy meowing and purring as Dill followed behind her. It almost looked as if she was showing him around, pausing to nod or rub up against something and then bringing Dill to another spot.

The front door opened and that was when Indy remembered anyone could see Dill and maybe he should have warned Neil about that. “Maybe we should… Oh!”

It was Seymour.

Seymour had the cat, Day, sitting on his shoulder and he was holding a Rolodex. “Whoa, fancy runnin’ into y’all again.” He hissed over at Neil, “What the fuck?”

HELLO SEYMOUR

MEOW MEOW DAY

Day giggled and meowed back.

“Hey.” Neil waved. “They’re asking about some flowers we sold. Might have to do with some bad drugs or something. Monster stuff. You meet Dill yet?”

Seymour blinked. “Who?”

Neil pointed toward the greenhouse without looking.

“Damn, that’s a big ol’ boy.” Seymour laughed heartily. He offered Indy his hand to shake. “Indy, right? Nice to meet you. Sorry ’bout earlier. His Royal ol’ Majesty can be real particular over me. Couldn’t help havin’ a little bit of fun.”

“Hope you enjoyed it because now he is no longer here to protect you,” Mr. Heiss was quick to point out. “I advise you to mind your tone, blood bag.”

Day hissed, meowing something angrily.

“Yeah, you’re right.” Seymour grinned. “Zolrya is real busy probably gettin’ greased up for some giant robot cock right ’bout now but my kitty girl is right here, and she’d love to take another bite out of your ass.”

HA HA

YES BITE HIM

VERY GOOD

Mr. Heiss snarled.

“Okay, how about we don’t do that right now?

” Indy placed a hand on Mr. Heiss’s shoulder.

“First of all, I need to give him a bath. I’ve been very neglectful and there is no part of this you want to put in your mouth right now.

And yes, Mr. Heiss is an asshole, the king of assholes, but he also has non-asshole moments I’d like to enjoy later without any pieces missing. ”

“Holy shit.” Seymour snickered.

“Right?” Neil chimed in.

“I can’t fuckin’ believe it.”

“Mark it on the calendar.”

“What?” Indy demanded.

“Never thought we’d see the day where Mr. Heiss got tangled up with one of the flesh bags he hates so much.” Seymour chuckled. “Good on you, Indy.” He wagged a finger at Mr. Heiss. “Yeah, but you? Fuck you still.”

Mr. Heiss stared flatly. “I can pull your intestines out through your nostrils, you fetid little—”

“But we will not be doing that! The only insides you’ll be rearranging are mine, thank you.” Indy snorted. “Maybe you should keep your teeth together or whatever.”

Mr. Heiss bristled for a moment but then he smiled.

It was not a very nice smile.

“Go on,” he taunted. “Run that pretty little mouth.” He leaned in close, his lips brushing over Indy’s ear as he whispered, “All the more reason for me to absolutely ruin you later.”

Indy shivered.

EWWW

I CAN HEAR YOU

Indy snickered, his cheeks warming as he leaned against Mr. Heiss. “Sorry not sorry, Izba. Just wait until you hear what I’m gonna do to him. It’ll make all your paint peel right off.”

“Okay! On that there note, here’s your Rolodex back,” Seymour said loudly, handing the Rolodex over to Neil. “Sorry I kept forgettin’ to bring it back.”

“No problem.” Neil set the Rolodex on the counter. “Izba had everything memorized anyway.”

YES

I REMEMBER ALL

Day meowed, hopping off Seymour’s shoulder.

She headed over to the greenhouse where Buffy and Dill were still exploring.

The three of them were an odd bunch, to say the least, but Indy thought it was pretty cute.

After all, there was no telling when the last time this many spirits had been gathered together.

“Don’t suppose you remember who bought a bunch of sampaguita flowers, do you?” Neil was asking Izba, giving the keyboard a violent shake. “I can’t find anything on this stupid computer since Shiloh updated the spreadsheets.”

“So, you don’t actually remember everything?”

SHUT UP YES I DO

UH

I’M THINKING

Mr. Heiss put his hand on Indy’s hip, giving him a small squeeze.

Indy leaned into the touch and smiled.

Okay, whatever.

Seymour and Neil likely thought Indy was crazy for defending Mr. Heiss, and Indy knew very well his demonic would-be beau was no saint.

And yet, there were moments like this one, small and quiet but heavy in their weight, where he was certain there was more to the king of assholes who everyone seemed to loathe.

Maybe.

Or he was blinded by good dick.

Like, really good dick.

While Neil and Izba went back and forth about the order, Indy looked around until his attention was drawn to the floor where the sunlight was coming through from the windows behind them. There were rainbows everywhere, no doubt created by some sort of wind chime crystal thingie or…

Rainbows.

Indy tensed.

Hadn’t King said something about rainbows?

Fuck, fuck, fuckity flyin’ fuck, what was it?

“Indy?” Mr. Heiss questioned. “You’re never this quiet.”

“Rainbows,” Indy said dumbly. “King said something about rainbows around five o’clock. I think. Shit. Wait! Wait, wait, wait. What time is it?”

“It’s not yet five and—”

An explosion outside rattled the entire flower shop, and one of the windows shattered inward.

Mr. Heiss wrapped Indy up protectively, his wings out like a shield to block the flying glass.

Seymour hit the floor, calling for Day. Neil managed to catch himself on the counter, eyes wide as he held on tight.

Indy struggled to escape Mr. Heiss’s grasp so he could see what the hell was going on.

The limo was in pieces, flaming chunks of metal scattered up and down the sidewalk, the road, and on top of other cars.

Someone was standing only a few feet away, filming the wreckage on their phone, and there were sirens wailing off in the distance.

More people gathered, gasping and pointing and recording.

One person, however, was walking away from the limo and right to the front door of the flower shop.

He hadn’t even bothered with a human disguise.

It was Mr. Mitternacht.
