Chapter 2
She rubbed her temple in irritation, then looked up at me.
“SuYueming, are you done? Every single time it’s the same thing—making a fuss over nothing. What new way are you planning to argue this time?”
“I know you’re uncomfortable with me going to ChenYi’s. But after all these years, you know how good he’s been to me. How much he’s suffered for me.”
“When he called today, his voice sounded so weak. He needs someone with him. I already let him down once because of you. This time, I can’t abandon him again. Do you understand?”
MuJinci has always carried this guilt about not ending up with ChenYi and instead marrying someone she only met through a blind date arrangement.
She thinks she owes him. That it’s unfair to him.
So whenever ChenYi shows her attention after marriage, she becomes even more tender toward him.
But I never asked to be dragged into this mess either.
I heard that back then, MuJinci’s parents didn’t approve of her and ChenYi getting married. They fought over it until they had no choice but to break up.
After that, her parents arranged for us to meet on a blind date.
At the time, I had no idea about any of this.
I just knew I was at the right age, the girl was young and beautiful, and our families already knew each other.
I thought it couldn’t get any better.
But MuJinci didn’t see it that way.
She didn’t like the guy her parents forced on her. She pretty much hated me.
During the blind date she was distracted.
I gave her roses—she sneered.
I invited her to dinner—she kept a cold face the whole time.
She was exactly my type, but I figured we had no fate.
I told her we should end things.
She looked relieved. So did I.
I thought we’d never see each other again.
Until one night, on my way home from overtime, I saw her drunk and cornered by a few thugs.
I stepped in.
I could’ve walked away.
Maybe it was just the way I was raised—I couldn’t stand by.
Or maybe, deep down, I still hadn’t let her go.
I chased the guys off and draped my jacket over her.
“Want me to drive you home?”
I asked from the driver’s seat.
She looked at me blearily and suddenly asked,
“Why did you help me?”
