Fighting the Flames for You

A firefighter carries her from a burning building while she fights to stay conscious and her oxygen runs out.

She wraps her arms around his neck, and her fingers slide over a long scar she never expected to feel again.

Two years earlier she had been a nursing student holding a firefighter together in her ER after falling debris cut his neck, until a helicopter lifted him out and left her without any word of whether he lived.

He eases her onto the grass, takes in her face, and goes still with recognition.

Quietly, he tells her the woman who saved him has been the one he has searched for ever since.
