Chapter 4 Late-Night Takeout and Doubts
After work, I headed straight to my best friend’s place.
We ordered takeout and I started venting about He Yuheng while we ate.
“How could he do this? Even if there’s no real feeling between us, I’m still his wife. How could he side with Jiang Xue—”
My phone pinged.
It was He Yuheng, using my Profile Picture, sending a photo.
The dinner he made: stir-fried shrimp with asparagus, stuffed green peppers with meat, lightly sautéed bok choy, and a three-delicacy mushroom soup.
All my favorites.
I huffed, looked away, and kept complaining.
“And what confuses me the most is how he actually listens to everything Jiang Xue says. What kind of friend makes him change his Profile Picture the moment she asks? Since when does he obey like that—”
Another ping.
He Yuheng: [What did you have for dinner? Should I save some dishes for you?]
I muttered to myself in my head.
Save what? Save it for your Jiang Xue.
I was about to continue ranting when my best friend stopped me.
“Something feels off.”
“What’s off?”
“What if everything Jiang Xue said is fake?” she asked. “People like her have questionable character. Lying about small things is normal for her.”
I insisted, “But He Yuheng really did change his Profile Picture.”
“He saw you changed yours, so he followed suit!”
I fell silent for a moment before speaking.
“He has no reason to do that.”
My best friend looked puzzled. “Why not? He probably thought you were ready to go public, so he cooperated with the announcement!”
What I didn’t dare admit was that, the second I learned He Yuheng had changed his Profile Picture to mine, a similar thought had flashed through my mind.
But Jiang Xue shattered that idea almost immediately.
So now it just felt ridiculous.
I shook my head, denying the possibility. “We’re not in a relationship that can be announced.”
“Other people might not know how we got married, but you do. He has no feelings for me, and I—”
My best friend lifted her chin, cutting me off. “I think he has quite a lot of feelings, actually.”
On my phone was He Yuheng’s latest message:
[What time are you coming home? Do you need me to pick you up?]
I was speechless.
From the outside, He Yuheng really did seem like a perfect husband.
Attentive, thoughtful, considerate—almost too perfect.
But—
“We’ve been married for months and we still sleep in separate rooms. We’ve never even held hands, let alone hugged or kissed. What kind of loving couple lives like that?”
My best friend rubbed her chin, studying me. “You sound almost… regretful.”
“…”
“I’m just saying, we’re not the kind of couple where he would change his Profile Picture for me.”
She sighed. “Fine, let’s drop him. Let’s drink!”
I ended up crashing at her place that night.
Before sleeping, I checked my phone. No more messages from He Yuheng.
When I opened our chat, I saw he had already switched back to his original Profile Picture.
Everything returned to how it was before.
As if nothing had happened today.
Even the gossip-loving group chat ignored the Profile Picture drama. Instead, they were buzzing about He Yuheng’s newest Moments post:
[No random gambling allowed in the company!]
I deliberately checked his Moments. I scrolled through everything. That post wasn’t there.
What? He blocked me?
I grew even more confused.
It wasn’t me who told him to change his picture. What right did he have to block me?
I called my best friend over to analyze it. “What do you think this means?”
She glanced at the time.
“It’s one in the morning and you’re still dissecting him. Don’t tell me you’ve fallen for him.”
I panicked and immediately tossed my phone aside.
“Sleep!”
