Chapter 6 The Moment I Said It Out Loud

The office went dead silent.

Every pair of eyes snapped to me.

I only then realized what I had just said.

My hands shook and my face burned.

I swallowed with difficulty.

Jiang Xue was the first to recover. She burst into mocking laughter.

“Did I hear that right? Did Sang Wan just say she’s married to President He? Oh my god! Bai Shu, pinch me quick—I think I’m hallucinating.”

The other colleagues quickly followed, scolding me.

“Sang Wan, that joke is way too much!”

“Yeah, we all know President He is single. Why would you suddenly say something like that?”

“Even if you have a problem with Jiang Xue, you can’t just make up rumors about President He!”

“Good thing there are no outsiders here. If this reached President He’s ears, you’d be in serious trouble.”

The situation was completely beyond what I expected.

I could only repeat myself. “I really am married to him. To He Yuheng. It’s the truth.”

The looks from my colleagues grew stranger.

Some even carried contempt.

Even the colleague I was closest to tugged my hand under the desk. “Stop talking.”

Jiang Xue stood up, laughing so hard she could barely stand.

“Sang Wan, jokes need limits. Forget that I’ve never heard of President He being married—you claim you’re already his wife. Do you have proof? Don’t you not even have his contact?”

I met Jiang Xue’s gaze. “I have his contact.”

“Oh? You do?”

She looked surprised, then amused. “Don’t just pick some random person from your friends list and pretend it’s President He. I can actually ask him to confirm.” She waved her phone.

I pressed my lips together and decided to go all in.

“Then go ahead and confirm. Ask He Yuheng right now whether I’m his wife or not!”

Even though I didn’t know He Yuheng that well.

I was certain of one thing—he wouldn’t lie about something like this.

No matter what kind of ambiguous relationship he had with Jiang Xue’s friend, the fact that we were legally married was ironclad.

He wouldn’t lie.

He had no reason to lie about it.

On this point, I was confident.

Jiang Xue’s expression flickered for a moment.

At least I was glad I only said we were married.

If I had claimed we were deeply in love, the one getting slapped in the face next would be me.

Under everyone’s stares, Jiang Xue picked up her phone.

A moment later she put it down again and gave me an innocent smile. “That doesn’t seem right. You’re supposed to be President He’s wife—why am I the one confirming? Shouldn’t you do it yourself?”

She sat back down leisurely. “This isn’t something for me to handle anyway. You should do it.”

The other colleagues turned to look at me too.

There was no need to back down now.

I picked up my phone and dialed He Yuheng’s number.

Right before it connected, I hung up. A terrifying thought suddenly hit me.

What if.

What if He Yuheng really didn’t back me up? I’d lose all face completely.

I told myself I couldn’t be impulsive anymore.

I needed to talk to him first, get everything arranged properly.

Jiang Xue saw me hang up. The expression on her face brightened instantly.

“—Huh? Why’d you hang up? Was that not President He on the other end? At least let him say a couple words so we can hear his voice.”

Sighs and murmurs spread among the colleagues.

I said, “No need to call.”

Meeting Jiang Xue’s smug look, I spoke calmly. “He Yuheng is upstairs. I’ll ask him to come down and tell you himself. Wouldn’t that be better?”

Jiang Xue’s face changed dramatically.

A collective gasp rippled through the room.

Just before I walked out of the office, I could still hear Jiang Xue’s disdainful voice behind me.

“You really believe she can get President He to come down? Just wait and see. She’s made this such a big deal—I want to see how she wraps this up!”
