Chapter 7 Asking Him to Go Public

I walked out of the office full of confidence.

The moment I stepped into the elevator, panic hit me hard.

What if there was even a one-in-a-million chance he refused to cooperate?

The words were his to say. If he didn’t want to announce it, there was nothing I could force.

I leaned against the cold elevator wall, feeling a little helpless.

How could He Yuheng possibly be connected to one of Jiang Xue’s friends…

Anyone else would have been fine. Just not her. The thought of her smug, fake smile made me angry all over again.

I couldn’t figure it out.

I feared asking myself which one mattered more to him—an unimportant wife like me, or Jiang Xue’s close friend who seemed so tight with him?

A sudden ringtone snapped me out of my thoughts.

It was He Yuheng calling.

Since I needed something from him, I softened my voice. “Hello?”

He paused for a second, then cleared his throat. “You called me just now. Sorry, I didn’t pick up. Is something wrong?”

I went straight to the point. “Where are you right now?”

“Just got back to the office.”

“Can I come up to see you?” I asked quietly. “There’s something I want to say to you.”

A choked cough came through the line.

He coughed a few more times before managing, “Y-Yes! Come up. I’ve already given your employee card access. The elevator will go straight to my floor.”

“Okay.” I ended the call obediently.

He sounded so easygoing.

Most of my anxiety melted away. He probably wouldn’t refuse me.

After all, he was the one who first said he would take care of me.

Now that I needed him, shouldn’t he step up?

I swiped my card and pressed the button for his floor.

The ride up felt like seconds.

When the doors opened, his special assistant was already waiting by the entrance. “Sang Wan, right? Please follow me. President He is expecting you.”

I followed behind him step by step.

He pushed open the door to the President Office with calm confidence. I walked in.

He Yuheng stood by the floor-to-ceiling window.

His back looked a little lonely.

Hearing the sound, he turned around. Up close it was even more obvious.

There were dark circles under his eyes.

I wondered silently if I had come at a bad time.

Was work stressing him out?

He gestured for me to sit on the sofa and started preparing a cup of fruit tea for me.

After pouring it, he sat down too.

His hands rested neatly on his thighs, head slightly lowered—like someone waiting to be scolded.

I looked at him. “What’s wrong with you?”

“Nothing.”

He sat up straighter and cleared his throat again. “You said there was something you wanted to tell me. What is it?”

I weighed my words carefully in my mind.

Should I be direct or gentle about it?

Suddenly I lifted my eyes and met his hesitant, almost pleading gaze.

My heart warmed. The words just came out.

“I want to make our relationship public in the company.”

“What?”

He Yuheng’s eyes widened. Even his voice cracked!

I had never seen such a big reaction from him.

He always seemed so calm and steady. Right now his eyes went wide and he actually flinched back a step.

Afraid he would refuse, I hurried to add, “I know this puts you in a difficult position, but I really want to do it. You said before that you would take care of me. Now I need you. Can you help me?”

He stared at me for a long moment before asking slowly, “…You mean make our marriage public?”

I was even more stunned.

“What other kind of relationship do we have?”

“Yesterday you kept ignoring me and didn’t come home. I thought you were going to—” He suddenly stopped.

When he looked at me again, light had returned to his eyes.

“I agree to make it public. I’ll do it right now!” He reached for his phone and even muttered under his breath that there was nothing difficult about it.

I stopped him. “Wait.”

He looked at me, confused.

I felt a little shy as I whispered, “Can you hold my hand and walk downstairs with me to tell my colleagues?”

I added quickly, “That’s the kind of public I want.”

He Yuheng looked so shocked he forgot to blink. “How is that…!”
