Chapter 13

CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Cole and Sierra are both scowling at some kind of screen when I step into the cockpit. Sierra’s voice is tight giving away her level of concern. “We’re going to have to go back. A sudden line of storms has popped up and it’s not safe for us to go around or above them.”

“Fuck. That’s not good. There’s nowhere else we can go?”

“There’s one other island, but the runway might be too short for us.”

“You’re an Air Force pilot, Sierra, can’t you wedge this thing onto a postage stamp?”

She grimaces. “I can try. But our best bet is to return to Isla Rosa.”

“Then what?”

“Refuel and wait.”

As I get a sudden case of heartburn, I say, “ This isn’t an easy job. Who the hell said this was going to be a piece of cake?”

Cole shrugs. “Maybe it was me. But hey, look, you got a wife out of it.”

I kick his shin. “ Temporary wife. We’re getting an annulment as soon as we land on American soil. Me and wives don’t mix.”

Sierra and Cole glance between one another. They share a small smile.

“Stick it, will you? Anyway. What’s our ETA?”

“Forty minutes. We’ve got a strong tailwind.”

Isla Rosa seems to have a grip on us. We’re close to the Bermuda Triangle… but not that close.
