chapter 2
I comforted myself, thinking the drought wouldn't affect the wheat much. Even if we ignored it, Roman would surely harvest this season's crops by autumn.
But I still felt uneasy.
The next morning, I used my long-saved living expenses to buy pesticide and carefully cleared the pests from our fields.
When Roman saw this, he couldn't help but laugh, saying I was more like a farmer than him.
I didn't dare relax, keeping a close watch on the fields every day.
Until harvest season arrived, the wheat grew tall and strong. The grain merchants who came to buy carefully inspected it and offered the highest price.
They said, "This batch of wheat is top quality. We'll pay a high price for it. You must save it for us."
Roman's face was full of smiles. "Great. This year I can buy new clothes for my daughter and wife."
After agreeing to harvest tomorrow, I could finally relax.
I guessed right. What Abigail said in her dream was wrong. As long as I don't believe her, it's fine.
That night, Layla made a turkey usually reserved for Christmas to celebrate. Then, we went to bed early to prepare for harvesting wheat tomorrow.
But at dawn, I heard an unbelievable wail. "How could this happen? Where did the locusts come from?"
I instantly became alert, a sense of foreboding bursting in my heart.
I rushed out without even putting on slippers. The scene before me left me wide-eyed in shock.
Locusts swirled like a black tornado over my wheat field. The wheat, which had been perfectly ready for harvest during the day, was now being devoured into a mess by the locusts.
Roman frantically waved his hands to drive away the locusts, but it was useless. He even accidentally fell to the ground, helplessly watching as the locusts devoured almost all our wheat.
That man, who was so tall in my heart, never got up again.
I leaned in and only heard him mutter, "It's over. All over. Eloise's tuition, money for Layla's medicine, the family's living expenses, all gone."
Roman's words made me feel deeply upset.
I wondered, "Why? I clearly didn't follow Grandma's words, and there was no locust plague in the previous life. Why is it happening this time?"
Before I could figure it out, Roman went out.
When he came back, his waist was deeply bent.
I knew he had gone to borrow money from relatives.
For someone as proud as Roman, this was such a humiliating thing.
Just thinking about it made me feel really upset.
However, that night, Abigail appeared in my dream again. She seemed to know about the difficulties at home now.
She sighed and said, "Eloise, go to the apple tree at the back hill. Your grandfather buried gold bars there for emergencies. Gold prices are high now. Sell them, and you can solve the immediate difficulties."
But in my previous life, I believed Abigail's words and happily shared this news with Roman.
But what was hidden there wasnt gold bars at all, it was drugs.
Roman was also mistaken by the police as a drug dealer and was arrested.
This time, I will never let such a thing happen again.
So the first thing I did after waking up was report this to the police.
I said, "It seems like something is buried under the apple tree in our back mountain, possibly evidence left by criminals."
They stayed silent for a long time, then told me they would investigate.
I knew this disrupted their plans, but to keep Roman out of it, I had no other choice.
That afternoon, the police drove to my house.
I was stunned for a moment, instinctively thinking they were here to thank me for my report. But to my surprise, the officers behind them walked in carrying a box.
That was the very box that got Roman imprisoned in the previous life.
