chapter 3

Why did the police bring in the box filled with drugs?

But what surprised me even more was that when the box was opened, it wasn't drugs inside, but over a dozen gold bars.

"How is there so much gold?" Roman asked in confusion, still unaware of what was happening.

But as soon as he stepped forward, he was pinned to the ground by the police and handcuffed.

This sudden situation left me completely stunned. I instinctively wanted to rush forward but was stopped by the police.

I asked, "Why are you arresting my dad?"

A police officer replied, "Because we've identified that the gold bars in this box are the ones stolen during the gold bar theft case in transit over a decade ago."

"Through our investigation, we've confirmed that the main culprit is your grandfather. And just now, your dad's guilty expression clearly shows he's connected to this case."

At this point, the police officer's gaze at me became complicated.

Then he continued, "Although turning your dad in will leave a mark on your life, you've helped the country catch the criminal and recover the losses, which is something to be proud of."

I couldn't believe it. "That's impossible. How could my dad be a criminal? Dad, hurry and say this is all a misunderstanding."

But when I turned to look at Roman and saw his face full of guilt, sadness, and the shock of betrayal, I couldn't believe it.

"Is this true?" I asked.

Roman looked at me and slowly revealed the truth.

He said, "Your grandpa wanted to improve our lives back then and brought back a box, then asked me to carry it. But when I discovered it was full of gold bars, I realized the truth that he had robbed a bank.

"But in those days, the consequences of crime were severe. At that time, your mom was already pregnant with you. For your safety, I chose to keep it a secret."

I thought, "So Grandma was telling the truth? But how is this possible? In my previous life, the box was filled with drugs."

Until the police took Roman away from me, I still couldn't recover from this shocking truth.

I still wondered in confusion, "Wasn't it drugs in there? How could it be gold bars? How could Dad be a criminal?"

At that moment, the door opened. It was Layla, who had rushed over after hearing the news. "Roman!"

But when she saw the empty room, she understood what had happened.

"It's over." She instantly collapsed to the ground, blood seeping from the corner of her mouth.

Layla's illness flared up.

I shouted, "Mom."

This scene, identical to the previous life, stirred the deepest fear in my heart.

I rushed up frantically to support Layla, but her dying gaze was fixed firmly on my eyes.

She said to me, "Your dad was wrong, but he did it all for you. Yet you reported him."

Layla's voice was choked with emotion. "Eloise, do you hate your dad for not giving you money to live a wealthy life, so you're deliberately retaliating against him?"

I shook my head and said, "No, no, it's not that. How could I hate Dad? I never truly wanted to hurt him."

But Layla passed out before hearing my explanation.

I hurriedly carried her to the hospital for emergency treatment. Rushing all the way there, after handing her over to the nurse, I also briefly passed out from exhaustion.

Here, I saw Abigail again.

She was deeply distressed and urged me, "Your mom's condition is critical. Only Everett from Central Hospital can treat her. If you don't go to him soon, it will be too late."

I suddenly woke up but fell into conflict.

In my previous life, I had witnessed Everett's skills. As long as he intervened in time, he could definitely save Layla.

I checked the time and realized Anthony's car accident in the previous life happened two hours later. I could completely prevent it.

Immediately, I called Anthony.
