Chapter Thirty
Ω Blakely Ω
On the days that Bronx goes into the station, I head into my office. There’s no reason for me to stay in the house by myself. It’s always a fun time coming in here.
As I walk through the door, I feel my phone buzz in my pocket. Bronx didn’t want to go in today, so he’s been texting me a lot.
Bronxy: :( I’m lonely. Come give me a hug.
Bronxy: You’ll make me happy :)
I snort. He’s cute.
Blakely: I’ll come visit you soon. I just want to check on everything here first.
I pocket my phone and head deeper into the building. It’s quieter here than usual.
Rebekkah peeks her head out from her office and smiles at me. I head to her office, and she shuts the door behind us.
“What’s going on out there?” I ask.
Rebekkah grins. “We’re playing the quiet game. If we sit down and work quietly until closing, I said we would get Friday off. Everyone wanted a three day weekend. We’re getting ahead of schedule.”
I laugh. “You’re being serious?” I sit down in a chair in front of her desk.
“Yes! It’s genius. Don’t worry I won’t be doing this all the time. It was a good motivator.”
I shake my head. “I guess I didn’t need to come in today to check on things.”
Rebekkah leans back in her chair and cocks her head. “Why did you come in today anyway? Not that I don’t love you coming in, but why, specifically, today?”
My cheeks turn pink. I guess I really haven’t been putting in an effort to come here anymore. I’ve been having fun being home with Bronx.
Home.
I never thought I’d be calling someone else’s house my home. We agreed that when he took a vacation, we’d start moving me in to the house.
“My paramedic is on shift.” I don’t have to be ashamed of my answer. He’s on shift, and I didn’t want to be at home all day alone.
“I love that you’re with someone now. It’s even better that your dad is his boss!” Rebekkah laughs. “How are things going with him?”
I cross my legs. “It’s going… good. Great. Honestly, neither of us have been in a relationship, really, so I think it’s a learning curve for the both of us.”
“Learning curves are good… I have a question for you, but you don’t have to answer…” Rebekkah smiles innocently at me.
I roll my eyes. “If that question is about my sex life, don’t bother asking me. I’m not going to answer.”
I don’t think that’s anyone's business but mine and Bronx’s.
Rebekkah laughs again. “First off, gross. I don’t want to hear about you and your kinky bedroom habits. I was going to ask how it was being in a relationship with a paramedic? I heard that it can either be great or not.”
I cover my face. “Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry Bekkah. I thought you were going to ask… That’s totally on me. There’s hardships. I’m not going to lie to you. They go through a lot, but when you choose them… it makes it easier. Choosing them over and over again,” I tell her.
My phone starts ringing. I take it out of my pocket and see it’s Bronx calling me. Okay… That’s definitely weird.
“I’m sorry, give me a second…”
Rebekkah nods. I answer my phone.
“Where are you?” Bronx asks.
I can hear his car accelerating. “I’m at work. Why? What’s going on? Where are you?”
I thought he told me that he was going to talk to my dad after shift to tell him that he was going to take a break.
“I’m heading home. Your dad benched me,” he snaps at me.
“Okay, well, you were going to take a vacation anyway, so why does it matter?” I rub the bridge of my nose.
“Because my partner went behind my back…” Bronx stops, and I hear him take a deep breath. “Okay. I’m sorry. I’m calm now. I apologize for raising my voice. I’ll come to you.”
“I drove here. I can head home.” I stand up from the chair and mouth ‘I’m sorry’ to Rebekkah. I head to the door and make my way out to where I parked my car.
“I can be there in a few minutes.”
“I know, but there’s no point in you driving here, and then following me home. I’ll head home and see you soon, okay? I love you.”
“Okay… I love you.” Bronx hangs up. I pocket my phone and get into the car.
I push the button to start my car but nothing happens. That’s weird… I push the button again. I hear my engine try to start but nothing happens again. Maybe it was a bad idea to tell Bronx to head home without me.
I grab my phone again and call him. Maybe he’ll turn around. My phone rings and rings, but he doesn’t answer. My dads name pops up on my screen. He’s video chatting me.
He always knows when I need him.
“Hi, dad!”
“Hi, princess. Is everything okay?” I move the phone away from me so he can see me better.
“Yeah, I think so. I’m not sure what’s going on with my car. It’s not starting…” I shrug. “I tried a few times and nothing happened. And! Before you ask, I have a full tank of gas. I actually went to the gas station before I came to work.”
My dad starts laughing. “I wasn’t going to ask that. I figured you’d call me if you needed me to fill your tank. I’ll head your way now. You can wait inside or stay in your car. I’m five minutes away.”
“Okay, thank you, dad. I love you.”
“I love you, princess.” He hangs up.
