Chapter Thirty One
Ω Bronx Ω
I’m not expecting to see Blakely get dropped off by her dad at my house. Is he really okay with her being with me? The front door opens, and Blakely walks in.
“What happened?” I ask. She said she drove to work.
“My car wouldn’t start.”
“Why didn’t you call me?” I pout. I want her to feel like she can depend on me as well.
Blakely smirks. “I did. You didn’t answer. My dad was just down the road. He said he’s going to get it towed to Alex’s shop, and he’ll take a look at it,” Blakely tells me.
“As long as you’re safe. That’s what matters to me, butterfly. I’m glad your dad was just down the road.”
Chief Knight would drop anything to get to his daughter, but so would I. I’ll do better about answering my phone. I don’t want to make her feel unimportant.
“What happened at work?” Blakely asks, taking off her shoes and heading to the couch.
“Your dad didn’t tell you?”
Blakely looks confused. “Do you want me to have him tell me all about you and him fighting at work? He’ll tell me. He’ll probably think it’s funny because he knows he makes you nervous.”
I snort and sit on the floor in front of her.
I bring her foot up and start to massage it.
“I do not want your dad to tell you about us fighting at work. As soon as we got in today, we were out on calls. I mean they were back to back. We didn’t get a break.
The first time we got an actual break, I went to get something to eat.
My partner, I guess, went to talk to your dad about how I’m not doing great, and I need a break.
My entire plan was to talk to your dad before we ended shift.
I didn’t want to leave them empty handed or scrambling to get someone last minute…
Your dad informed me that I was going to take a break or risk getting suspended and or fired if I messed up treating a patient… ” I tell her everything that happened.
I was frustrated when it first happened, but now I know it was for the best. I feel a lot better being home and not having someone's life in my hands.
“So, at the end of the day, you got what you needed, right? No one died. No one got hurt. You got a warning and were told to take a break.” Blakely smiles at me.
“You being on your dad’s side annoys me.”
Blakely glares at me. I smile innocently at her. “That’s my dad.”
“Yes, but you should be on my side.” I kiss her thigh.
“Would that be fair to you to just be on your side because I love you?” she asks.
“I guess not…” I pout. “I’m just annoyed with the situation. I wish my partner would’ve given me time to talk to Chief Knight myself. I felt ambushed.”
“You have every right to feel that way, babe, but I feel like my dad handled it well…” Blakely pauses. “I don’t want you to be mad at him for doing his job.”
I groan dramatically. “Your dad did his job. He didn’t overreact. He didn’t even yell at me.”
Blakely laughs. “He doesn’t yell as much as you like to say that he does.” She places her other foot on my leg.
“Let me correct you, princess.”
Blakely gags at the word. “I told you you can’t call me that. Ew. Only my dad gets to call me that.”
I chuckle. “Let me correct you, butterfly. Your dad doesn’t raise his voice at YOU. Everyone else? I think he starts to raise his voice when he thinks we’re not going to listen to him.” I shiver at the memories that pop into my head.
He knows how to get people to listen, that's for sure. I used to hate when he’d talk to me like he was disappointed in me. I still do.
Blakely giggles. “I don’t think we’re talking about the same person. He’s never had to raise his voice at me.”
“Yes, because daddy's little girl can do no wrong. You never did anything in high school. You did your work. You were a straight A student. It’s why your dad was so surprised when you started hanging out with the troubled football star. You were, and still are, way out of my league, butterfly.”
She never understood why her dad hated me being around her so much.
I got into trouble. I slept around. I did what I wanted and had no consequences.
My parents never wanted to be parents, so when I got to be old enough to take care of myself, they let me do whatever I wanted and didn't ask questions.
I get up and sit beside her on the couch. Blakely turns to me. “You never told me why you call me butterfly.”
I pick her up and place her in my lap. “There are many reasons why I call you butterfly… You’re innocent, sweet, and fragile, just like a butterfly…
Butterflies are colorful. They bring beauty to life around them.
You brought that into my life. You bring a sense of light and peace to my life that I can’t quite understand.
You were always the brightest part of my days in high school… You kept me sane,” I explain to her.
She brings out the best part of me. Blakely smiles at me. She kisses me once. “I think that’s the cutest thing you’ve ever said to me.” Blakely laughs. “You should be cute more often. I like it.”
I wrap my arms around her waist. “I love you. I’ll start telling you cute things more often.” I kiss the side of her neck.
I lay her down on the couch and unbutton her jeans. “But let me first start by worshiping your body to show you just how much I love you…”
