CHAPTER THIRTEEN

KAbrINA
One Month Later
A month has gone by, and my life has been filled with so much peace and joy. After everything that happened with Alexander, I asked Amari to stick around. I know we shouldn't be seeing each other, but things just feel so right between us.
Shortly after we murdered my now ex-boyfriend, we went back over to Mikey’s house for dinner. There was no sign that we were there, and we disposed of the truck and the body. Things felt normal, and I was finally able to surround myself with people who made me laugh.
Tonight is our company's masquerade party, and I've invited Amari to come with me.
People don't need to know he is a former client, but I do want my parents to meet him because we have gotten closer every day.
I don't know if it's because there's a trauma bond between us from what happened to him in prison and me with Alexander, or something else.
All I know is I'm enjoying his company and want him to be around others who make me happy.
I picked out a red dress with silver sequins on the top to match my red headband, black and red mask, and moon necklace. Amari, on the other hand, opts for black pants, a grey shirt, a blue suit jacket, and a standard black mask. We throw on our clothes, and boy, do we look good.
We drive together to the office, and as we stand in the elevator together, I make sure to check in to see how he's feeling.
“You ready for tonight? My parents can be a bit judgy, but I’m sure you’ll love them.”
“If they are anything like you, then I know I will love them,” he responds.
This man always puts a smile on my face. We have yet to talk about what is going on between us, but I guess right now that’s not important.
The elevator dings, and we both step out of it. We are greeted by my parents in the foyer area. I know the point of a masquerade party is not to reveal the identity of the guests, but for my parents, they should know who we are.
“Hey, Mom and Dad,” I say, hugging them both.
I can see my dad's eyes through his mask, roaming up and down Amari's body, curious who he might be.
“Mom, Dad. I want you to meet my boyfriend, Amari.”
Fuck, I just called him my boyfriend, even though we never discussed this before.
“Nice to meet you,” he says, shaking both of my parents' hands.
“Welcome to the family,” Dad says.
“Let’s go have fun,” I say, grabbing Amari’s hand and squeezing it.
“Let’s have fun, girlfriend,” he says while kissing the top of my head.
If it wasn’t for him, I would have never survived Alexander. Instead, I would be dead somewhere. I don't know what I would do without him.
