Epilogue #2
“They’re tears of joy, baby.” Mom’s mouth curves up slightly. To everyone else, it looks like I’m comforting my grieving mother, not telling her I’m getting married to my stepbrother.
“Okay, I’ll let you cry now because it fits the situation,” I say. “You can’t be laughing at a funeral. But no more crying after this, okay? You’ve done enough crying for a lifetime, Mama.”
“Okay, darling.” She tries to compose herself.
“Excuse me, Miranda.” A short woman with red hair in a bun and a long gray dress interrupts us, placing a hand over Mom’s shoulder. “I just wanted to give my most sincere condolences.”
“We’d better get going,” Kayden says, seeing as more people near us, all wanting to talk to Mom.
“Thank you,” Mom says to the woman. “Just give me a minute, please.”
The woman nods and backs away, waiting in a line that starts to form.
“I have to talk to all these people, but how about you come home in a couple of days, and we have dinner together again?” She gestures to both Kayden and me.
“To celebrate. Something private and small. I still need to sort out the details about the will, but I want to give you guys some money. It’s the least I can do. Okay?”
I’m about to complain, but Mom grazes her finger against my mouth.
“Shh. I’m not going to hear any complaints. I’m giving you money. You can do as you wish with it. We’ll talk to my lawyer later to arrange the details. Okay? I’ll see you soon?”
I nod, lean forward, and envelop her in a hug. Kayden hesitates once we break apart. Staring at Mom like he wants to hug her, but he isn’t sure if he should. She lifts the burden off him, reaching for his big, wide shoulders and wrapping her hands around them.
Kayden holds onto Mom, and I think I see a tear smear down his cheek.
“I’ll see you soon, darlings.”
“You got it, Miranda.” Kayden gives her a small nod. “We’ll see you soon.”
We move aside and walk away as Mom gets surrounded by people crying over Lucas’ passing.
Once we’re at the back of the room, Kayden sighs.
“Are you okay?”
“Yeah.” He bites his cheek, hands still planted in his pockets. “That was intense.”
“Yeah.”
“I think I need something to get me off the edge, a little bit.” Leaning closer, he wraps his arms around my hips.
“Kayden…” I gnaw at my lip, understanding where this is going. “We’re in church, at your father’s funeral.”
His whole demeanor changes, a smirk spreading across his lips. He cranes his neck and whispers, “And you made me fuck you next to a dead body. Remember, Little Demon?”
A wave of heat flushes through my body as memories of the night play in my head.
I did do that. God, I’m sick.
“Besides, there’s this.” He pulls away from my body, leaving enough distance for him to grab his phone. He presses a few things and turns the screen my way.
It’s a picture of a page of my diary. He made sure to photograph each one of the entries in it, to make it more convenient for himself, instead of having to carry my diary everywhere.
“One of the last things on the list of fantasies,” he declares.
I want to do it somewhere forbidden. I want to be tainted and sin where I shouldn’t.
It’d be so thrilling.
Fuck my diary.
“Doesn’t the school count as that?” I counterattack, hoping I can get away with it.
The idea of sneaking around somewhere in this church and having sex with Kayden sends a rush right to my pulsating clit, but there are things we need to talk about.
“Technically, yes, but since we were there by ourselves and there was no witness, no.”
He smiles, pocketing the phone and bringing me closer again, his hand dancing dangerously against my thigh, and sneaking underneath the edge of my skirt.
I hold my breath, holding back a whimper as a tingling sensation fills my center.
“The confessional shouldn’t be occupied right now.”
Fuck. Kayden’s going to turn me into a serial sinner.
“We—we shouldn’t.”
“Why not? You like danger.” He licks his lips, and his words turn into whispers again. Dirty ones. “Doesn’t it make your pretty little cunt wet, imagining me slamming my cock into you against the tight four walls of that narrow room?”
I rub my legs together. Oh, God. Oh, God.
I pant. “Yes.”
“Then let me make your fantasy come true, little sis.”
“Don’t call me that. Are we even still stepbrother and sister?” I ask. The realization is hitting me. “Your dad’s out of the picture, so my mom isn’t technically married to him anymore.”
“You’re right. I’m sorry. How about my wife?”
A chill runs down my spine. I gulp. “That’s…”
Devon’s nickname for me. The nickname the guy who hasn’t popped up in months gave me.
Not after Kayden and I finally admitted our feelings for each other, and I promised to keep him on a leash if needed. I joked that he got scared of me when I said that.
“Oh. Shit.” Kayden’s eyes widen. “Don’t tell me that’s…Is that what Devon used to call you?”
I don’t even wonder how he came to that conclusion himself. I nod.
“Then…how about—”
“My wife is good. I am going to be your wife, it’s only fitting.”
“No, you don’t need to compromise. There are plenty of other nicknames.”
