Chapter Thirty-Five

DAN

I feel like it’s all my fault that Kallen’s been fired. And although Untold Media might’ve fired him anyway – even after finding out about him and me – I could’ve at least been honest, said it wasn’t a mistake.

But now he’s gone from the office, and the emptiness next to me feels more consuming than a free desk space should.

Bye, Dan. I’m sorry.

His words felt final, as though he never wants to see me again.

I wouldn’t blame him.

The office is mostly silent for the rest of the morning. I try small-talking with Blake over lunch, but it seems as though she doesn’t want anything to do with me either.

Fair enough.

Kallen is her best friend, and she probably thinks it should’ve been me fired. The newbie. Not the guy who’s been here for two years.

The rest of the afternoon drags on, and I leave the office as soon as the clock hits five. Usually, I would stick around for a few minutes to at least finish up the article I’m working on .

But not today. I can’t stand being here for another minute today.
