Chapter 11 The Photograph
A Picture Online
Ethan woke to his phone vibrating against the bedside table.
At first, he ignored it.
He was still half asleep, staring at the ceiling while his mind slowly caught up with the morning. The room was quiet, and the curtains were only partly open, allowing a thin strip of sunlight to fall across the floor.
His phone vibrated again.
Then again.
Ethan frowned.
Someone had sent him several messages before eight in the morning.
He reached for the phone.
The first message was from Marcus.
Dude. Are you awake?
The second came immediately after.
You need to check the swim group.
Ethan's stomach tightened.
He opened the group chat.
There were dozens of new messages.
He scrolled upward.
Then he saw the photograph.
For several seconds, Ethan didn't understand what he was looking at.
Then his heart stopped.
It was him.
And Ryan.
Standing on the back porch of the party.
The picture had clearly been taken from inside the house through the open door.
They were standing close.
Too close to explain away easily.
Ryan's hand was near Ethan's face.
Ethan's body was angled toward him.
Their faces were inches apart.
Even though the photograph didn't show the kiss itself, anyone who knew them could understand what the moment looked like.
Ethan stared at the screen.
His mouth went dry.
No.
No, no, no.
He zoomed in.
The image became clearer.
His expression was unmistakable.
He wasn't looking at Ryan like a friend.
He was looking at him like someone he wanted.
Someone he trusted.
Someone he loved.
The thought made his stomach twist.
He immediately locked his phone.
Then unlocked it again.
Maybe he had misunderstood.
Maybe it wasn't really them.
It was.
The caption above the photograph was simple.
Okay, what's going on here?
There were already dozens of replies.
Some were joking.
Some were asking questions.
Others were simply tagging people.
Ethan's hands began to shake.
He sat up in bed.
Ryan was still asleep across the room.
Ethan looked at him.
For one moment, he considered waking him immediately.
Then his phone vibrated again.
Another message.
Then another.
The photograph was spreading.
Ethan could feel his chest tightening.
He opened the group chat again.
A teammate had written:
Is that Ethan?
Another replied:
Looks like him.
Someone else wrote:
And that's Ryan, right?
Ethan stopped reading.
He couldn't.
He placed the phone face down.
His breathing had become shallow.
The room suddenly felt too warm.
He pulled the blanket away.
His skin felt damp.
Of course.
Of all mornings.
He looked toward the bathroom.
Normally, he would have immediately gone to shower.
But he couldn't move.
The photograph had made everything else disappear.
His body.
His scholarship.
His team.
His classes.
His friends.
Ryan.
All of it seemed connected now.
Someone had captured the one moment they had forgotten to be careful.
Ethan rubbed his face.
He remembered the porch.
The cool air.
Ryan's hand.
Their kiss.
The student opening the door.
He had known something like this could happen.
But knowing it was possible had been different from seeing proof on his phone.
Ethan looked at Ryan again.
Ryan shifted in his sleep.
Ethan felt a painful mixture of affection and fear.
He loved waking up and seeing Ryan there.
He loved knowing that the person he trusted most was only a few feet away.
But now someone else had seen what they had been trying to keep private.
Ethan's phone vibrated again.
This time, Ryan woke.
He rubbed his eyes.
"What time is it?"
Ethan didn't answer.
Ryan looked at him.
"Ethan?"
Ethan held out the phone.
Ryan sat up.
"What happened?"
"Look."
Ryan took the phone.
His expression changed as soon as he saw the photograph.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then he looked at Ethan.
"Okay."
Ethan laughed nervously.
"Okay?"
"I mean..."
Ryan looked back at the screen.
"I knew there was a chance."
"They posted it."
"I can see that."
"It's already in the swim group."
Ryan nodded.
Ethan stood.
"I can't believe this."
Ryan got out of bed.
"Ethan."
"What am I supposed to do?"
"First, breathe."
"I am breathing."
"Not properly."
Ethan turned toward him.
Ryan stepped closer.
"We'll figure it out."
"Everyone is going to know."
"We don't know that."
"It's already spreading."
Ryan looked at the phone.
He was right.
The photograph had moved beyond one group.
Someone had apparently posted it in another student chat.
Then another.
Ethan saw notifications arriving faster than he could read them.
His stomach twisted.
"What if my teammates start asking questions?"
Ryan didn't answer immediately.
"What if my coach sees it?"
Ryan's expression became serious.
"What if people start talking about me?"
"They might."
Ethan stared at him.
Ryan continued.
"But people talking doesn't mean they know the truth."
"They know enough."
"They know we were standing together."
"They know."
Ethan's voice cracked.
"They know."
Ryan reached for his hand.
Ethan pulled away.
"I can't."
Ryan stopped.
Ethan walked toward the window.
He looked down at the campus.
Students were already moving between buildings.
People were beginning their day.
Ethan imagined the photograph appearing on hundreds of screens.
Someone looking at it in the cafeteria.
Someone showing it to a teammate.
Someone laughing about it in a classroom.
Someone asking whether Ethan was gay.
Someone asking whether he and Ryan were dating.
Someone asking why he had lied.
The possibilities multiplied until he couldn't think clearly.
His phone vibrated again.
He looked.
This time, it was a message from Daniel.
Ethan, are you okay?
Another followed.
Is that you and Ryan?
Ethan's heart sank.
Daniel knew.
Or at least he suspected.
Ethan stared at the message.
Ryan came up beside him.
"Who's that?"
"Daniel."
"What did he say?"
Ethan showed him.
Ryan read the messages.
"He cares about you."
"I know."
"You can answer him."
"What do I say?"
"The truth."
Ethan looked at him.
"What truth?"
Ryan didn't push.
"Whatever you're ready to say."
Ethan looked back at the phone.
He wanted to tell Daniel everything.
He wanted to say yes.
Yes, it was him.
Yes, Ryan and I are together.
Yes, I care about him.
Yes, I'm happy.
But fear stopped every word.
He typed:
It's complicated. I'll explain later.
He sent it.
Then he turned the phone off.
Ryan watched him.
"That's okay."
Ethan nodded.
He wanted to believe that.
But the notifications continued.
By breakfast, the photograph had reached students Ethan barely knew.
By midmorning, people were whispering about it in the cafeteria.
Ethan could feel eyes following him as he walked across campus.
Maybe some of them weren't actually looking at him.
Maybe his anxiety was making everything feel worse.
But then two students passed him and whispered.
One looked back.
Ethan's stomach dropped.
He kept walking.
At the athletic center, Marcus approached him.
"Hey."
Ethan stopped.
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
"About that picture..."
Ethan's heart began racing.
"Yeah?"
Marcus lowered his voice.
"Are you and Ryan together?"
Ethan couldn't answer.
Marcus waited.
Ethan finally said, "I don't want to talk about it right now."
Marcus nodded.
"Okay."
He walked away.
Ethan stood there, frozen.
That was all it took.
One question.
One person asking.
The secret was no longer safely inside Room 318.
It was outside.
In the hallways.
In the group chats.
In the cafeteria.
In the athletic center.
Ethan felt exposed.
He wanted to disappear.
He went into the locker room and found an empty bench.
His hands were shaking.
He looked at his phone again.
The photograph was still there.
He stared at it.
Part of him hated the picture.
But another part of him couldn't deny what it showed.
He and Ryan had looked happy.
They had looked close.
They had looked like two people who belonged together.
That should have made Ethan smile.
Instead, it made his chest hurt.
Because the world had seen something Ethan was still struggling to accept himself.
He locked the phone again.
His teammates would know.
His classmates would know.
His friends would know.
Maybe even his coach would know soon.
The photograph was spreading across campus, and Ethan could no longer control where it would go.
For years, he had feared people noticing his body.
Now he was facing something even more frightening.
People were noticing his heart.
And Ethan had no idea what they were going to think.
Ethan Pulls Away
Ryan knew something was wrong before Ethan stopped answering his messages.
At first, the silence seemed understandable.
The photograph had spread quickly, and Ryan knew Ethan was frightened. He had seen the panic on Ethan's face that morning. He had watched him struggle to breathe while staring at the picture on his phone.
So Ryan gave him space.
He sent one message.
I'm here when you're ready.
Ethan didn't answer.
Ryan didn't send another.
He waited.
By lunchtime, Ethan still hadn't replied.
Ryan saw him across the cafeteria with several members of the swim team. Ethan was sitting at the end of the table, listening to a conversation without saying much.
Ryan started toward him.
Ethan looked up.
Their eyes met.
For one second, Ryan thought Ethan might smile.
Instead, Ethan looked away.
Ryan stopped walking.
A strange emptiness settled in his chest.
He told himself not to take it personally.
Ethan was scared.
That was all.
But the next morning, Ethan canceled their breakfast plans.
Sorry. Busy.
Ryan stared at the message.
He typed:
No problem. Another time.
A few hours later, he sent another message about studying.
No response.
That evening, Ryan returned to Room 318 and found Ethan already there.
Ethan was sitting at his desk with headphones on.
Ryan put his bag down.
"Hey."
Ethan lifted one hand.
Ryan waited for him to remove the headphones.
He didn't.
Ryan stood there for a moment.
"Okay."
He sat on his bed.
The silence was uncomfortable.
It hadn't always been this way.
A few days earlier, Ethan had been sitting beside him, holding his hand and kissing him between study sessions.
Now they were barely speaking.
Ryan tried to understand.
He really did.
