Chapter 12 The Fight

Words That Hurt

Ethan barely slept after Ryan left the room.

He stayed awake long after the hallway had gone quiet, staring at the ceiling and replaying their conversation again and again.

Are you ashamed of me?

The question wouldn't leave him alone.

He had answered no.

He had meant it.

He wasn't ashamed of Ryan.

He was ashamed of how frightened he felt.

But he knew that distinction hadn't helped Ryan.

By morning, Ethan felt exhausted.

He checked his phone.

There was no message from Ryan.

That hurt more than he expected.

He had become used to waking up and seeing Ryan's name on his screen.

Now there was nothing.

Ethan sat on the edge of his bed.

He wanted to message him.

He typed several different messages.

I'm sorry.

Deleted.

Can we talk?

Deleted.

I didn't mean to hurt you.

Deleted.

Finally, he put the phone down.

He didn't know how to explain something that barely made sense even to him.

He loved Ryan.

That was becoming harder to deny.

But fear had always been louder than love in Ethan's life.

Fear had protected him.

At least, that was what he had always believed.

Fear had made him carry extra shirts.

Fear had made him check his body constantly.

Fear had taught him to avoid crowded spaces and uncomfortable conversations.

Fear had helped him survive years of teasing.

Now that same fear was hurting Ryan.

Ethan hated that.

He hated himself for it.

That afternoon, he found Ryan outside the sports-science building.

Ryan was standing alone near the steps.

Ethan stopped several feet away.

"Ryan."

Ryan looked at him.

His expression was guarded.

"What?"

"Can we talk?"

Ryan hesitated.

"Okay."

They moved toward a quieter part of the campus.

Ethan didn't know where to begin.

"I'm sorry."

Ryan looked away.

"You've said that."

"I know."

"Sorry isn't the problem."

Ethan nodded.

"I know."

Ryan folded his arms.

"Then tell me what is."

Ethan took a deep breath.

"The photograph."

Ryan's expression tightened.

"That's part of it."

"What else?"

Ethan looked at him.

"Everything."

Ryan waited.

Ethan struggled to find the words.

"I'm scared."

"I know."

"No. I mean I'm really scared."

Ryan's expression softened slightly.

Ethan continued.

"I keep thinking about what happens if people find out."

"They already know."

"Not everyone."

"But enough."

Ethan nodded.

"That's what scares me."

Ryan looked frustrated.

"Why?"

Ethan's voice became quieter.

"Because I could lose things."

"Like what?"

"My scholarship."

Ryan stared at him.

"I've worked for that scholarship since before I even got here. Swimming isn't just something I do. It's the reason I'm here."

"I know."

"If people start talking, what if my coach thinks I'm distracted? What if teammates treat me differently? What if it affects how people see me?"

Ryan shook his head.

"Ethan, dating someone doesn't make you a worse athlete."

"I know that."

"Then why are you acting like it does?"

"Because I don't know what other people will think."

Ryan sighed.

"And your friends?"

Ethan swallowed.

"I'm afraid I'll lose them too."

"Why would they leave?"

"I don't know."

"Exactly."

Ethan looked down.

"I don't want everyone asking questions."

"Neither do I."

"I don't want jokes."

"Neither do I."

"I don't want people looking at me differently."

Ryan was quiet.

Ethan continued.

"I spent years trying to make people stop noticing me."

Ryan's expression changed.

"I know."

"I finally found people who accepted me."

Ryan nodded.

"And now I'm terrified that telling them who I really am will change everything."

Ryan looked at him for a long moment.

"Who you really are?"

Ethan realized how that sounded.

"I mean..."

Ryan interrupted gently.

"I know what you mean."

Ethan looked away.

Ryan stepped closer.

"But Ethan, you aren't only someone who sweats too much."

"I know."

"You're not only the scholarship swimmer."

"I know."

"You're not only the person people might gossip about."

"I know."

"Then why are you letting all those things decide whether you can be happy?"

Ethan didn't have an answer.

Because he had spent years doing exactly that.

Ryan sighed.

"I understand being scared."

Ethan looked at him.

"I know you do."

"But you're treating our relationship like it's something shameful."

Ethan's chest tightened.

"I'm not."

"You are."

"I'm trying to protect it."

Ryan's expression hardened.

"By hiding it?"

"Yes."

"From everyone?"

"I don't know."

Ryan shook his head.

"That's not protection."

Ethan felt his own frustration rising.

"What do you want me to do?"

"I want you to stop acting like I'm something you need to hide."

"I never said that."

"You don't have to say it."

Ryan's voice became quieter.

"I see it every time someone walks toward us."

Ethan looked away.

"That's not fair."

"It isn't fair to me either."

Ethan's frustration broke through.

"You think this is easy for me?"

"No."

"You think I don't want to be able to walk beside you?"

"I don't know what you want anymore."

"I want you!"

The words came out louder than Ethan expected.

Both of them went silent.

Ethan's chest rose and fell.

Ryan stared at him.

Ethan swallowed.

"I want you," he repeated more quietly. "That's the problem."

Ryan's expression softened.

"How is that a problem?"

"Because you're important."

Ryan looked confused.

Ethan continued.

"If you weren't important, I wouldn't be this scared."

Ryan didn't answer.

Ethan looked at him.

"I've lost people before."

"So have I."

"I know."

"I know what it feels like."

Ethan nodded.

"But this feels different."

"Why?"

"Because you're the first person who has seen everything."

Ryan's eyes softened.

"Everything?"

"The sweat. The smell. The fear. The things I hate about myself."

Ethan's voice shook.

"And you never made me feel disgusting."

Ryan looked at him.

"Because you're not."

Ethan looked away.

"That's why I can't lose you."

Ryan's expression changed.

"You won't lose me just because people know."

"You don't know that."

"No. But neither do you."

Ethan was silent.

Ryan took a breath.

"I don't want to fight with you."

"Neither do I."

"Then listen to me."

Ethan nodded.

Ryan's voice was steady.

"You keep talking about protecting our relationship."

"Yes."

"But you're treating it like something that needs to be hidden."

Ethan looked at him.

Ryan continued.

"There's a difference between privacy and shame."

The words hit Ethan hard.

"You can choose privacy because something matters to you."

Ryan stepped closer.

"But when you start running every time someone sees us, when you deny me, when you act like being associated with me is dangerous, it stops feeling like privacy."

Ethan's eyes burned.

"What does it feel like?"

Ryan looked directly at him.

"Like you're ashamed."

Ethan felt something inside him break.

"I'm not."

Ryan nodded.

"I know you don't want to be."

Ethan couldn't speak.

Ryan continued.

"And that's why this hurts."

Ethan looked at the ground.

He suddenly understood.

Ryan wasn't asking him to become fearless.

He wasn't asking him to announce their relationship to the entire university.

He wasn't even asking him to stop being afraid.

He was asking Ethan not to make him pay for that fear.

And Ethan had been doing exactly that.

Every time he pulled away.

Every time he pretended Ryan was only his roommate.

Every time he refused to answer a message because he was afraid someone might see.

Every time he chose silence instead of reassurance.

He had been protecting himself.

But he had been hurting Ryan.

The person who had accepted him most completely.

The person who had never once made him feel ashamed of his body.

The person who had listened to his worst memories and stayed.

Ethan felt tears gather in his eyes.

"I'm sorry."

Ryan looked at him.

This time, Ethan didn't use the words as an easy escape.

"I'm really sorry."

Ryan remained quiet.

Ethan swallowed.

"I thought hiding would protect us."

Ryan's expression softened slightly.

"But I was really protecting myself."

Ryan nodded.

"That's what I needed you to understand."

Ethan looked at him.

"I don't know how to stop being afraid."

"You don't have to stop all at once."

"But I don't want to keep hurting you."

Ryan's eyes held his.

"Then don't."

Ethan nodded.

"I'll try."

Ryan looked away.

"Trying matters."

Ethan wanted to reach for him.

He didn't.

Not yet.

The distance between them felt enormous.

He had wanted to protect the relationship.

Instead, he had made Ryan feel unwanted.

He had taken the person who had accepted every vulnerable part of him and made him question whether Ethan was ashamed to be seen beside him.

That realization hurt more than any rumor could.

Ethan wiped his eyes.

"I don't want to hide you because I'm ashamed."

Ryan looked at him.

"I know."

"I hide because I'm scared."

"I know."

"But I need to learn the difference between protecting something and being afraid to claim it."

Ryan nodded slowly.

For the first time that day, Ethan felt that Ryan understood him.

But understanding did not erase the damage.

And Ethan knew they still had a difficult conversation ahead.

Ryan Walks Away

Ryan stood quietly after Ethan finished speaking.

He could see the regret in Ethan's face.

He could hear the honesty in his voice.

And somehow, that made everything harder.

Because Ryan believed him.

He believed Ethan was afraid.

He believed the fear came from years of being judged, teased, and made to feel as though his body was something he needed to apologize for.

He understood why Ethan wanted to protect his scholarship.

He understood why the photograph had frightened him.

He understood why the thought of everyone knowing about them felt overwhelming.

But understanding did not make the hurt disappear.

Ryan looked across the quiet campus path.

Students passed in the distance, laughing and talking as though nothing important had happened.

For Ryan, everything felt different.

"I believe you," he finally said.

Ethan looked at him.

Ryan continued.

"I believe you're scared."

Ethan nodded.

"Thank you."

"But I don't think we're going to solve this by arguing."

Ethan looked down.

"I don't want to argue."

"Neither do I."

Ryan took a slow breath.

"I think we need some space."
