Epilogue

ONE YEAR LATER—CHRISTMAS EVE

SYANNE

I can’t believe a year has passed and we’re all back at St. Nick’s for the holidays. Unlike last Christmas, I’m not the least bit stressed. Not until Reid barely speaks to me during the entire family Christmas dinner then pulls me aside to “ talk .”

The way he stares at his feet makes my palms clammy.

“Syanne, since you’re an accountant at St. Nick’s, we can’t keep dating. The board insists it’s against company policy.”

“Then, I’ll resign,” I blurt, with no hesitation. I want to protect Reid. He loves his new ambassador position, minus all the headaches of being the CEO.

His jaw hardens. “There’s only one solution. We have to stop dating.”

No! I thought he loved me! I blink back tears.

Then Reid drops to one knee and holds out a small black box with a gleaming diamond ring. “Will you marry me? ”

Dancing above a dimpled-grin, his hazel eyes connect with mine at last, shining with laughter and love.

My “yes” is swallowed up by cheers from the whole family, including three grannies exchanging high-fives.

He slides the ring on my finger and stands to hug me. “I love you.”

“I’m not so sure,” I tease. “Just now, you almost killed me.”

“I’m sorry.” His grin is unrepentant. “But I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to you, starting with this…”

He captures my lips in a kiss that explodes fireworks behind my eyelids.

“Wow.” I struggle to catch my breath. “A couple of those every day for the next fifty years, and you’re forgiven.”

His breath tickles my ear, sending chill bumps down my arms. “It will be my pleasure.”

And they lived happily ever after!

HARMONY

I can’t believe West kissed me. He shouldn’t have done that when I’m pretending to be his brother’s girlfriend.

Still, it was only one little kiss, even if those few seconds knocked my socks off and changed my world.

And nobody saw us, right?

Yeah, I could be wrong about that…
