96. Chapter Ninety-Five

Chapter Ninety-Five

Scarlett

Ifeel much better after my weird shower in the tiny bathroom of the jet.

I’m no longer covered in a sheen of sweat and …

everything else. I’m clean and fresh and feeling like I can handle anything the jungle can throw at me.

I put on sunscreen before I slip into a new set of red underwear, then I get dressed in a navy pencil skirt and baby blue cami.

I make the decision to wear Sapphire’s cross body purse to keep the sunscreen and her phone where I can grab them quickly. The sunscreen, for Trick’s sake, mostly, and the phone because there’s a chance we’ll run into a signal at some point when we get closer to the resort.

I put the strap over my head and then I sit down on the edge of the bed to put on socks and the white gym trainers that I found at the back of Sapphire’s closet when I was packing.

They’re kinda cute, actually.

Not that I wear sneakers often, but under the circumstances, I don’t hate these.

I step out of the bedroom to find Kian in the main cabin, drinking a can of soda.

“Is that cold?” I ask.

He shakes his head. “It’s an extra one I found at the back of the mini-fridge. There are a few in the cooler beside the sandwiches though. Those should be cold.”

“I’ll grab a water,” I decide, knowing we’ve got a long day ahead.

I take it out of the box. It’s not warm, but I don’t know if I’d call it cold.

“How long do these coolers work for, anyway?” I ask, realizing it’s something I’ve never thought about before.

Kian blinks slowly. “Um, up to three days, supposedly. Has it stopped working?”

“It just seems less cold than it was. It’s probably not a big deal.”

He comes over and checks the sandwiches. “Hm. I don’t know how much longer these will last. It’s definitely not at cold as it was. Damn. I should have been more careful.”

“Isn’t there another one?”

“Uh, yeah, but it’s probably fucked already considering Riley had it on the beach all day. That’s probably what messed with this one, but at least it wasn’t out there so long.”

“Damn. Guess we’ve got a little less food than we thought.”

“Then it’s a good thing Riley’s not in drinking mode. He turns into a gremlin after midnight when he’s drunk, and he’ll eat anything that’s not locked away.”

“We should probably tell Xane.”

He nods. “Don’t worry, I’ll tell him. After we’re all ready to get going. Don’t wanna make him mad twice before breakfast.”

“Okay. Is it cool if I head out to the beach? I’d kinda like to get a picture of those baby sharks before we leave.”

“Oh, uh … Wait for Trick and he’ll go with you, okay? I don’t want our girl out there alone, and he won’t like it either.”

I smile at him. “It’s not far, and there’s no one out here but us.”

“Well, yeah, but your ours to protect now.” He smiles back, and I can’t find it in me to argue.

It’s too cute that they think I need protecting.

“Okay. I guess I’ll wait.”
