Chapter One-Hundred-Three
Scarlett
Ican’t shake the feeling that something is off with Xane.
When he leaves to go take a nap, I get lost in my thoughts, trying to pinpoint what my intuition is trying to tell me.
I haven’t tried to read his emotions since he threatened me in the main cabin of the jet.
I could be frustrated that I don’t know what he’s feeling, but this seems different to me.
Usually when my intuition is bothered by something, it’s because there’s something to be worried about.
This feels like that.
I’m not gonna let it go.
That’s not how it works.
I clear my throat as I get to my feet. “I need to go talk to Xane before he goes to sleep.”
“Good luck,” Riley says. “The guy is dead to the world the second his head hits a pillow.”
“I’ll come with you,” Kian says, springing to his feet quickly.
“I kind of want to talk to him alone,” I admit.
“Then just let me walk you to the jet.”
“In private?” I add, hoping he gets the hint.
“Just let her go, Ki. It’s a few yards away, and we’re the only ones here.”
Thank God for Riley Rush.
It’s definitely not the first time I’ve had that thought, but the circumstances of those other times were also very private.
“We’ll check on you in ten minutes, okay?” Trick asks.
Kian pulls a face. He clearly doesn’t want to let me out of his sight.
“We’re still mated, even if I’m not right by your side,” I assure him. “Think of this as practice for when we get back to life in the real world.”
He looks like he’s ready to sulk, but he sighs loudly instead.
“Okay, I guess. Try not to be gone too long.”
“I won’t,” I reassure him. “Back soon.”
I walk fast, not wanting to lose any more time.
It’s really not far to the jet, and when I get there, I immediately know I was right.
He’s not here. I know it before I even set foot inside the jet.
I check the cabin and take note of the missing backpack before I open the cockpit door.
I seriously doubt he’s in the bedroom, but I head back there, ruling out the bathroom on the way.
When I step into the bedroom, I already know it’s gonna be empty.
What I don’t expect to find is a note left on the bed.
“I’ve gone on to the resort alone. It’s best this way. Don’t come after me. Wait here for rescue. I’ll see you all in a few days.”
I crush up the slip of paper, too mad to let it go.
No one wanted him to do this, but he snuck out anyway, completely ignoring the majority vote to stick together and head out tomorrow.
I never would have thought Xane Orion had it in him to make me so angry, but that’s all he’s done since I got here.
Well, he doesn’t get to run away and leave the rest of us behind.
I rush out of the jet and move toward the forest.
He’s been gone for maybe fifteen minutes.
I can catch up to him.
But I’m gonna have to go after him alone.
There’s no time to waste, so I rush forward, stopping every so often to make sure I’m seeing evidence that boots have stomped over the ground where I’m running.
Lucky for me, he’s carved a pretty clear path ahead.
I sprint when I’m sure I have a good stretch forward, and I stop to check for signs whenever there’s a fork in front of me. The landscape barely registers. I don’t care about any of it.
All I want is to catch up to the asshole who left this note, and I don’t care how long it takes me to do that.
