“You’re busted,” I tell Dex over the phone. We didn’t get to visit this weekend because he had to travel for a meeting. It sucks.
“What did I do?” he questions with amusement and curiosity lacing his voice. Man, I miss hearing that voice in person. Whispering dirty things in my ear.
“I think you know.”
“Aw man. You finally figured out that I’ve been tricking you into keeping me around by giving you endless orgasms? You realized I’m not actually that interesting and caught on to my scheme? ”
I chortle through the phone. “What? First of all, you’re the best person I know. And second, I’m way too smart to be fooled by the likes of a penis.”
A breathy laugh comes from his end. “Noted.”
“Okay, but to be totally serious for a minute: thank you.”
“For?”
I release a breath. “My brother.”
“Ah.”
“Yes. Ah,” I say. “You really shouldn’t have, but…thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
“When did you arrange all that?”
“Called them when I was waiting for you in the truck during that visit.”
“Of course you did.” I smile. “That place is so expensive though…I can’t let you…at least let me pay you back or something.”
“No offense, Dani,” he chuckles, “I love and respect what you do, but it’s probably more than a whole year’s worth of a teaching salary.”
“Damn teaching salary,” I sigh, not even slightly offended. “But jeez, Dex, I can’t let you spend that much.”
“Dani, it’s done. And it was honestly nothing, so don’t even worry about it.”
“Hard not to.”
“Well, if it makes you feel any better, I give more than that to charities every year. ”
“Actually, yeah. That does make me feel a lot better,” I say honestly. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
“So…what kind of charities? If you don’t mind me asking.”
“Oh, you know. Wounded animals, hungry kids, suicide prevention, sexual assault victims…just to name a few.”
I pause.
“Dex…”
“Yes?”
“Thank you.”
“I love you, Daniela Isabella Martin.”
“I love you, Dexter Kai Farrell.”
“See you next weekend?”
“Can’t wait.”
