~Devina~
I tossed and turned in my bed but not even a single position felt comfortable.
I sighed and finally got out of the bed.
Pulling on some shoes I quietly crept outside.
I didn't bother changing my clothes, which I was now regretting because my bare legs were freezing.
I hurried over to Zane's house and softly knocked on the door.
After a few taps, there was no reply so I opened it.
I shook my head at his carelessness. Someone could break in.
Like me. I giggled and locked the door behind me.
"Zane?" I whispered but there was no reply.
I crept upstairs and into his room. He was dead asleep.
I smiled and walked over to the other side of the bed.
Crawling under the covers, I felt him start to stir.
I held my breath, not wanting him to get mad but the only thing he did was smile and open his green eyes.
"I can't sleep," I whispered and he frowned.
"What time is it?" He looked over at the bedside clock and frowned again. "It's almost six. Why didn't you come over sooner?" I shrugged and pulled the covers up to my chin.
"Didn't know it was that early. Sorry." He shook his head and pulled the covers away from me a little. "Zane, it's cold!" I whined making him chuckle.
"I'll keep you warmer than a piece of fabric." He spoke and pulled me into his side. "And I guess you should have worn more clothes." He pointed out making me blush.
"I was hot at Dylan's." He tensed a little at the mention of his brother's name but relaxed after a few seconds.
"That better be because-" He stopped himself and shook his head. "I'm sorry. You're welcome here anytime Sunshine." I smiled and buried my head in his chest. Before I drifted off to sleep, I faintly heard him mumble something. "Welcome home."
I woke up at nine which made me jolt out of Zane's arms and run to the door. Before I could open it was blocked by Zane's bare chest.
"I called you in sick today. You barely even slept." He picked me up in his arms and brought me back to the bed. "And with everything going on at school, you just need a break." I rolled my eyes and pulled the covers up to my chin.
"What I need is to graduate high school." I laughed and pulled him into the bed, next to me. "But thank you," I added making him smile.
"Anything for my Sunshine." He leaned in and kissed my forehead sending jolts of electricity through my body. "Now what do you want to do today?" I thought about it then sent him my cutest smile. "What?" He hesitantly asked.
"I wanna go for a ride." His eyes bulged making me blush. "In the GT-R." I quickly added making him laugh.
"Okay, but I'm driving." I agreed and hopped out of bed. "No Devina you need to sleep." Zane tried to protest but I just kept walking.
"If I'm really tired I'll just sleep in the car. Now I gotta go get dressed." Zane shot out of bed and blocked my way again.
"Just stay here while I hop in the shower and get ready then I'll take you back over there so you can get ready." I giggled and wrapped my arms around his chest.
"I like seeing you more often." He smirked and pulled my face up to his, locking our lips together.
"Me too. Now I gotta shower." I nodded and watched him walk to the bathroom.
Once alone in the room, I felt awkward. I waited as I heard the water turn on and the shower curtain open, then shut.
Finally, ten minutes later, Zane walked out with just a pair of jeans hanging dangerously low on his hips.
"I um," He nervously chuckled and held out two shirts.
"Which one?" I laughed and pointed to the gray one.
He threw it on over his head and smiled.
"Some of your stuff is still here." I nodded and followed him to my old room.
I opened the drawer and my eyes widened.
"You bought me clothes?" Zane smirked and nodded.
"I wanted you to be prepared." If I ever came over. I rolled my eyes and picked out a pair of jeans and a black shirt. "Do you have to shower?" I shook my head.
"Did that last night." He nodded and looked down at the clothes.
"Right, I'll just-" He pointed to the door.
"Yeah." He closed it behind him and quickly got dressed.
I had also left some mascara and Chapstick so I hurried and applied a little of both.
After ten minutes, I was ready so I opened the door to find Zane right there.
I jumped and clutched my chest. "I told you I wasn't going to leave you alone.
" He shyly smiled making me do the same thing.
"You're crazy." I laughed and followed him to the kitchen.
"Only for you, Sunshine." He winked. "What do you want to eat?" I scrunched my nose at the thought of food this early.
"I'm not hungry." He suspiciously narrowed his eyes.
"You need to eat something." He pulled out a box of cereal and some milk.
"Not if I'm not hungry Zane." I rolled my eyes and pushed the food away.
"Devina just eat the food." He poured the milk in the bowl first then the cereal.
"What did you just do?" I slowly asked making him freeze.
"What? I made cereal." I glared at him and back at the poor cereal.
"You pour the milk in first?" He nodded with a "duh" look on his face. "Ew! Why? Everyone knows you put the cereal in first." He chuckled and put a spoon in the bowl also, lifting it up to my face.
"Eat woman!" He tried to shove the food into my mouth but I pushed it again and started walking towards the front door. "No. We aren't leaving until you eat something." I rolled my eyes and popped a cornflake into my mouth.
"There. I ate. Now let's go." He copied me and rolled his eyes.
"So demanding." He muttered as we got into his GT-R. I gasped and smacked his shoulder lightly.
"Says the one who tried to force me to eat!" He laughed again and backed out of the driveway.
~Zane's POV~
I drove Devina around showing her the pack city and basically my whole life.
She seemed to enjoy it but after a few hours, she still wasn't hungry.
Somethings going on. It was getting late so I drove her back to Dylan's house and dropped her off.
I have things to do. I told her when she asked.
"I'll take you to school tomorrow, okay?" She nodded and I watched as she got out of my baby and walked inside. "Sam." I greeted as he answered his phone.
"Alpha, how are you?" I backed out of the driveway and hurried over to his house.
"I'm fine and I'm on my way to your house. I need you to get me Devina's medical file." There was a long pause on the other end of the line before he sighed.
"I'll get it but if she finds out you're doing background checks on her, she's not going to be too happy." Bow it was my turn to sigh.
"I know but I need to make sure she's alright." He agreed and I hung up. As soon as I parked my car in his driveway, I jogged up to Sam's house and knocked three times.
"Here." He answered and handed me the file.
"Thanks, Sam. For everything." I sped back home and ran up to my office.
The whole drive home I had to resist not ripping into the file.
I sat down at my desk and slowly opened the file.
It was in chronological order so the records started when she was born.
I smiled as I read what time and day she was born.
She was born on a Sunday. The file was too thick to not hold anything personal.
I skipped through a few pages until I got to a few years ago when she was thirteen.
As my eyes analyzed and took in the text, my heart dropped.
This was when all her problems started, something must have happened.
This was probably when her dad left. It said that she was hurting herself and one time she ended up in the hospital because she went too far.
Another time she tried to end things completely but luckily she didn't take enough pills.
Then after she got out of a treatment facility, her eating disorder started.
As I kept reading, I could practically feel my eyes darken.
No one was really there for her when she was starving herself to death.
I slammed the folder shut and stomped over to Dylan's house.
Pounding on the door, I could smell her inside getting closer.
When the door opened she furrowed her eyebrows.
"Zane, what are you doing here?" I scanned her body for any kind of marks. I grabbed her arms and inspected her wrists and arms. There wasn't anything there. "Let go of me, Zane! What are you doing!?" She yanked her arm back and self-consciously wrapped her arms around her chest.
"Where did you do it? Huh? And you haven't even eaten anything yet today have you?" Her eyes widened and she took a step back. Away from me. My eyes dropped and I shook my head. "Oh my god. I'm sorry I didn't mean to-" A tear escaped from her cheek but she didn't let me try to comfort her.
"You don't get it do you?" She whispered.
"I had nothing. I had no one. You don't understand how hard it is for me to believe that someone actually cares about me.
You just walked into my life and changed everything and it's not that easy for me to adjust. That's why I-I didn't handle it very well when my dad left.
" A tear fell from my eye as I listened to her story.
I swallowed the lump in my throat and tried to walked forward to her but she took another step back.
"D-Devina I know things have changed a lot," Another tear fell from my green eyes and landed on my Vans. "But please don't hurt yourself anymore. I really can't lose you Sunshine." She completely broke down and fell to the floor. I was quick to fall down next to her and pull her into my arms.
"What's going on? Devina?" Dylan came rushing out of his bedroom and put his hands on her shoulders. "Dev what's wrong?" I suppressed the growl from within my chest and moved away a little so he could get to her.
"I-I'm going to go back home," I mumbled and got up off of the floor. Devina whimpered and shook her head.
"No." She got up and hurried into my arms. "Don't leave." Dylan looked from the back of her head to my eyes.
"Come on." I helped her walk to my house and I tucked her into my bed.
"Get some sleep. I'm not going anywhere.
" She nodded and buried her head in my chest. After a few minutes, her breathing evened out and I knew she was asleep.
Looking down at her, I smiled. She's not perfect, but she's perfect for me.
"I love you," I whispered before falling asleep with her in my arms.
