Chapter 4 My Hand Slipped

This was my first time accompanying Fu Siyan to a social event.

Maybe because I usually kept too low a profile, plenty of curious looks came my way the moment we appeared.

Fu Siyan had his arm around my waist. I went stiff, and his arm tightened.

He leaned in by my ear, his tone a little teasing:

"Mrs. Fu, relax."

That "Mrs. Fu" made my cheeks burn.

After the opening dance, Fu Siyan started chatting with a few men who looked like company executives.

I lifted my skirt and walked toward a high stool not far away.

I was a little hungry.

I had just reached for a small dessert when a burst of gossip reached my ear.

"That's President Fu's wife, the one he just married? She doesn't look like anything special."

"Don't look down on her. She's the Qiao family's daughter. Any piece of jewelry on her is enough for us to work a lifetime."

"She's pretty enough, sure. She just lacks presence. Not like President Fu's White Moonlight."

White Moonlight?

The next second, someone picked it up.

"President Fu's White Moonlight is a female star now, right? That figure would make even women get a nosebleed."

"Yeah. A few years ago she and President Fu showed up at a banquet together and even made the news. Standing next to each other, they really matched."

"What a shame. Why didn't President Fu pick Lin Ximo?"

"Maybe this Miss Qiao used some tricks. Otherwise, with so many well-bred girls, why would President Fu marry her of all people?"

After that, I heard a burst of laughter.

A few of the women even glanced my way, pretending it was casual, their eyes full of contempt.

"Even if she climbed up, it won't help. I heard Lin Ximo is coming back soon. Who knows who'll win then."

...

The talk was getting uglier.

I frowned and walked toward the gossips.

As if by accident, all the red wine in my glass splashed onto the woman in front.

"Oops. My hand slipped."

I had stained her skirt.

She glared at me, her face ugly.

"Miss Qiao's hand slipped at such a convenient time."

"Running your mouth at an occasion like this, you should know better."

I curved my lips and looked down at her.

"So you said all that on purpose for me to hear. What were you trying to say?"

My presence made the woman seem to flinch at once.

Seeing I wasn't easy to mess with, the people beside her rushed to smooth things over.

I didn't want to blow it up either and make everyone look bad.

I only shot her a warning look, then lowered my eyes and walked out.
