Neighborly Interlude 3

Betty

“Betty. Betty.” Elaine barreled through the back door like a kid at Christmas, wide-eyed and shocked as she waved her binoculars. “You have to look out the front. Get the microphone.”

What had I missed?

“What are you going on about?” She didn’t answer as I followed her to the front door but I knew she’d get to the point eventually. Elaine’s feet always worked faster than her mouth. “Is it the Larson boy again?”

He made the worst decisions.

“No, she’s back.” Elaine squeaked out the answer as I sucked in a breath. “And she brought Atlee’s mother.”

The nerve.

“That woman…” There they were. “What’s she thinking?”

“Nothing with any common sense.” Giggling, Elaine peeked out my front window. “This is going to be good.”

Retirement was much more interesting than I’d ever imagined.
