Chapter Twenty-Three
“Don’t hesitate to call if you need something,” Jenna said, one hand on the doorknob.
Neither Roadkill nor her sister told her that he’d already talked to the girl. If whatever she needed was minor, she’d call Joker or Papa Smurf. They’d made sure the girl had both numbers, as well as a few others, earlier in the week.
“I’ll be fine. Go have some fun for a change,” Lacey said.
Jenna watched her sister for a moment, then closed the door leaving Lacey inside.
“I’ve been waiting all day to do this,” Roadkill said, before lowering his head to cover her lips with his.
He started slowly, giving her time to tell him no or back away if she didn’t want it.
But Jenna didn’t move. She didn’t step away but stepped closer.
He brushed his mouth over hers, and one arm hooked around his neck.
He didn’t have to coax her to open beneath him, instead, she seemed as eager to taste him as he was to taste her.
He lost track of time as he explored her mouth and reveled in how she leaned into him, trusting him with her body, with her pleasure. Roadkill played one hand down her side, taking in every curve, every bountiful inch of her body. Jenna pulled away, her breathing heavy.
“We can’t do this,” she said, glancing around.
“Why not?” He didn’t want to let her go.
“Not here. Not where everyone can see us.” Her voice was barely more than a whisper.
“All right, darlin’,” he said. The last thing he wanted to do was embarrass her, so he led her down the stairs and to the bike.
“How hungry are you?” he asked after they’d both mounted but before he started the engine.
He loved the way she didn’t hesitate to wrap her arms round his middle and hold on tight.
“I could eat, but I’m not starving why?”
“Just wanted to know if we needed to eat or ride first. Ride it is,” he said as he walked the bike backwards, then started the bike and steered them out onto the road.
He turned on to the highway, heading away from Mobile, and spoke.
“You want to talk or just enjoy the ride for a while?”
Jenna jumped when he first spoke. He hadn’t warned her that he’d put a headset in her helmet, much less turned it on before she’d put it on.
“Why me?” she asked, her voice small.
“What do you mean?”
“Just that. Why are you doing this and why me? Do you feel sorry for us? Is that why you got me a job and you’re helping us? Is this a pity date?”
Roadkill saw red for an instant. He eased the bike on to the shoulder and killed the engine before dismounting and turning to face her. He hit the catch and lifted her helmet off before removing his own, then he went to one knee, so he was eye to eye with her where she still sat astride his bike.
“Number one. I don’t do pity dates. Ever.
I think you’re sexy as hell. If didn’t I wouldn’t have asked you out.
So you can get that out of your head right now.
As for helping you out? You needed it and I could, so I did.
And I wouldn’t do it any different, but that has nothing to do with you and me. ” He didn’t break eye contact.
“But. I’m fat. How can you find me attractive?” She tried to drop her gaze, but he put a single finger under her chin.
“Look at me, darlin’. I want you to see that I mean what I’m saying to you.
” It took a couple of seconds, but she lifted her gaze to meet his.
He ignored the cars passing them only feet away.
“I don’t tolerate people talking bad about what’s mine.
Not even you. If I say you’re sexy as hell, then that’s the truth.
You’re not fat. You’ve got curves, you’re soft, you’re sexy as hell, and unless you don’t want to be, you’re mine. ”
He’d already asked Hex to order a property cut for her, and to make sure they had a few Savage Blood shirts for Lacey. Yeah, he might have gotten a little ahead of himself, since he hadn’t even slept with her yet, but when you know, you know.
“Yours?” she whispered. “What does that mean?”
“It means you’re mine. You have worries, you come to me.
You need something, I’ll make sure it’s taken care of.
It means if anyone has anything bad to say about you, they say it to me, and I take care of the situation.
It means you never have to face anything alone again.
I’ll take that weight for you or at least share it. ”
“You want me to do what you tell me to. To stay where you tell me to stay and to mind my own business.”
“No, darlin’, your strength is part of what I love about you. I will never take that from you. I want to take some of the pressure off you. I want to be your shield from the world. The shoulder you cry on. I want to be your old man the same as I want you for my old lady.”
“Old lady.” She wrinkled her nose in distaste over the term. “Why do you have to call me that?”
“It’s just a term, darlin’. One the men in my world, and I don’t just mean the Warriors, understand. If you’re my old lady, if you’re wearing my property cut, then they won’t hit on you, they won’t treat you like club ass. You’ll get respect.”
Her eyes went wide when he said the words club ass.
“What about Lacey? She’s not anyone’s old lady and no one had better treat her like what did you call it? Club ass.”
Roadkill shook his head. “She’s Savage Blood.
No one will disrespect her and because she’s Blood, every Warrior will defend her, just as they will Elizabeth and Hex’s kid.
No one hurts Savage Blood without having to pay for it.
” He watched her, trying see her thoughts, but failing.
All he could tell from her expressive face was that her mind was reeling.
“Want to ride for a bit while that processes?” he asked.
Jenna didn’t say anything, just nodded.
“I’ll leave the headset on, all you have to do is talk normally and I’ll hear you, okay?” Roadkill gave her back her helmet, then pulled his own back on. When she was ready, he climbed back on, started the bike, and pulled back out onto the road.
